CARIBOU – Eunice Rilla (Bean) McCrossin Hemingway, 95, passed away April 4, 2011, at a Presque Isle health care facility after a long illness.

She was born Oct. 5, 1915, to parents Leroy Henry Bean and Lula Gertrude (Wheaton) Bean.

Eunice was united in marriage to Grover Harry McCrossin for 43 years and had two children, Paul and Gary. After the death of Grover, she was married to Robert Hemingway for 20 years with two stepchildren, Robert M Hemingway and his wife, Gail, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Duska Franklin and her husband, Jeff, of Caribou. Eunice worked as a schoolteacher in a one-room schoolhouse, James School, Presque Isle from 1936 to 1937, followed by teaching positions in Limestone and Caribou. After teaching she accepted a position with the state of Maine, Child Health and Welfare for 10 years and then as a probation and parole officer for 15 years until she retired in 1975. During Eunice’s retirement she enjoyed gardening and quilt making with her granddaughters. Eunice was an active member of United Methodist Church, Caribou.

Whether she was teaching Sunday school, baking pies or other activities to support the church, she enjoyed the fellowship and devotion or her church family. Above all, Eunice enjoyed time spent with her family and friends.

Eunice was predeceased by her parents, Leroy and Lula; as well as eight siblings, Thurston, Murle, Kenneth, Leslie, Althea and Alton Bean, Doris (Bean) Rose and Melba (Bean) MacDougal. Eunice is survived by her sons, Gary McCrossin and wife, Barbara, of Woodland and Paul McCrossin and wife, Linda, of Presque Isle; two sisters, Gladys Gooding and Ellouise and husband, Lee Somers, of Presque Isle; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to visit noon until time of the funeral 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, with Pastor Ron Chaffee officiating.
