BANGOR – Gerald Edward Turner, 76, husband of Julia (Shannon) Turner, died April 14, 2011, surrounded by his family at his home. He was born Feb. 3, 1935, in Bangor, the son of Roy S. and Bessie H. (Somers) Turner.

Gerry attended Bangor public schools and graduated from Bangor High School in 1953. His love of sports began in high school and followed throughout his life. He was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church and CYO. He served on the parish council and the school board. Gerry was well known for his career of more than 40 years in the grocery business. During his last years with Hannaford, he was the community service liaison, a continuation of his lifelong community service. Gerry could often be found at area events running concessions or “Ducks on a Pond” to raise money for United Way, Children’s Miracle Network or Cascade Park. After retirement he continued to serve, appearing in television and print ads for Eastern Agency on Aging and as a volunteer leader for the American Folk Festival. Gerry was an avid crusader for the new Bangor arena complex.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Bertha King, Marion Sutkus and Janet Rau; and brothers, Raymond Hexter and Roy and Leroy Turner. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Julia (Shannon) Turner, are three daughters, Libby Turner, Margaret “Peggy” Turner and Mary Turner; three sons, James Turner and his wife, Mary Nason, Jerome “Jerry” Turner and his wife, Melissa, and Gary Turner; grandchildren, Joel and Garrett Boardway, Jocelyn and Desmond “DJ” Turner, Austen “Rootbeer” Turner, Aaron and Sydney Turner, and Tyler Wood and Tiana Turner.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 4-7 p.m. Monday, April 18, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, at St. Paul the Apostle, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ohio Street, Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, after the service.
