MACHIAS, Maine — Half a dozen residents of western Washington County were arrested Thursday as several law enforcement agencies worked together to conduct bail and probation checks in the area, according to police.
The sweep also included information-gathering by police into several ongoing investigations of thefts, burglaries and other suspected criminal activity, Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith indicated Friday in a prepared statement.
The round up follows another similar sweep conducted by police two weeks ago in eastern Washington County in which 10 people were arrested, according to police. Law enforcement agencies that participated in that effort, which was aimed at gathering information about several suspected arsons in the area, included the sheriff’s department, Maine Forest Service, State Fire Marshal’s Office, Maine State Police and police departments in Calais, Eastport and Pleasant Point.
Participating in the latest sweep were officers from the sheriff’s department, Maine Forest Service, state police, Maine Warden Service, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and Milbridge Police Department.
Among those arrested Thursday were Nicholas Davis, 24, of Harrington on charges of eluding an officer and exceeding the posted speed limit by 30 mph or more. His bail was set at $750 cash. Jason Lisee, 36, of Columbia Falls, Harry Newenham, 34, of Steuben and Jamie Smith, 32, of Addison were each arrested on a charge of violating conditions of release and are being held without bail, according to Smith’s statement.
Larry Murphy, 37, of Columbia was arrested on an unspecified warrant and is being held on $480 cash bail, according to Smith. Kerry Nash, 50, of Milbridge is being held without bail on an alleged probation and parole violation.
All six were taken to Washington County Jail in Machias.
