HOULTON – Merritt C. Lenentine, 81, died May 8, 2011, surrounded by his family at his residence. He was born March 7, 1930, in Monticello, the son of Clarence E. and Iva M. Lenentine.

Merritt served with the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955 as a staff sergeant during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he went to work for Houlton Savings Bank, thus beginning a 34-year career in banking. He was a longtime member and past treasurer of Military Street Baptist Church, a past noble grand of Rockabema Lodge No. 78, member of Grand Encampment of the Atlantic Provinces and a member of Monument Lodge No. 96.

Merritt is survived by his wife, M. Louise (Stairs) Lenentine of Houlton; two sons and their wives, Mark A. and Michelle of Sidney and Peter O. and Katharine of Gaithersburg, Md.; two sisters, Elva Coburn of Houlton and Alma Hutchinson of Cape Coral, Fla.; three grandchildren, Kaileigh, Taylor and Tess; several nieces and nephews.

The wake will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Military Street Baptist Church, Houlton, with funeral services 1 p.m. Interment will be at Monticello Jewell Cemetery.
