BANGOR, Maine — Thunderstorms containing strong winds, large hail, dangerous lightning and heavy rain began passing through northern, western, coastal and central Maine midmorning today, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou.
By late morning, scattered power outages were reported in Washington County, and Knox County Emergency Management director Ray Sisk said a fire on Mountain Street in Camden likely was started by lightning. Details were unavailable at 11:20 a.m.
The hazardous weather outlook posted on NOAA said the storms could be severe in certain areas including northern Aroostook County, and that some areas could see high winds with possible rotation. Gusty winds are expected to remain after the main storm passes.
Vermont and New Hampshire experienced severe storms this morning, with three-quarter-inch hail, frequent lightning, heavy rain and strong winds. No reports on any damage were available.
