PHIPPSBURG and OSPREY, Fla. – Ann Louise (Crichton) Karter, 70, died April 29, 2011, in Boston, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 17, 1940, in Presque Isle, daughter of the late Philip and Angela (Donahue) Crichton.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Eli; five children, Mary and Mike Huth of Pittsfield, Mass., Elizabeth and Shawn Murphy of Eaton, Ohio, Kate and Mike Orroth of Davidson, N.C., John and Jennifer Karter of Chicago and Michael Karter of Chicago; 11 grandchildren; siblings, Mary Crichton, Steve Crichton, Clare and Alan Hitchcock, Peter and Jennifer Crichton and Angela Ellen and Chris Delong; numerous nieces and nephews.
Ann graduated from Aroostook Central Institute in 1959. She attended the University of Maine, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and a Master of Arts degree in teaching. While raising her children, she pursued her teaching career for 10 years. She then directed her energies to volunteer work in the various communities in which she resided. One of her most notable accomplishments included being named to the Top Ten Women by the Ohio House of Representatives. This distinction recognized the following: co-chair, designer Show House 6, for Dayton Philharmonic Women’s Association; chair of Dayton Art Institute Art Ball; and campaign chair of Dayton Performing Arts Fund. She served on the board of Dayton Chapter of American Red Cross and was awarded Volunteer of the Year, Board Member of the Year and recipient of the 10-Year Service Award for financial development and leadership. She also served on the board of Carillon Park and Dayton Ballet. Fraternally she served as president of her PEO chapter in Dayton, Ohio, and most recently as president of her chapter in Sarasota, Fla. Throughout her life, Ann fought courageously, loved deeply and gave selflessly. For those who have had the privilege to know her, she will be missed profoundly.
Visitation was held 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, May 5, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 144 Lincoln St., Bath. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bath.
