MARY-HELEN HARDIEUNION – Mary-Helen Hardie, 94, died Friday, July 1, 2011, at her home. She was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Eastport, to John and Helen Wadsworth Raye.She grew up in Eastport and graduated from Shead High School, Eastport. She graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, and she attended the University of Michigan for her master’s degree. She married Alexander Hardie, Nov. 6, 1943. She taught math and science for many years. She taught at Eastport High School; the University of Maine, Orono; Union High School and lastly at Medomak Valley High School, Waldoboro. She was a member of Medomak Valley Education Association and was a very active member of Union Historical Society. She also volunteered in the library at Pen Bay Medical Center, Rockport. She helped her husband plant more than 1,000 apple trees on the Hardie Farm, Union, where they were well known for their apple cider.She enjoyed her family, taking walks, and watching the birds and turkeys from her home.A service to celebrate Mary-Helen’s life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at Faith Baptist Church, 144 Mills Road, Newcastle, with the Rev. David O’Donnell officiating. A reception will be after the service at the church. The committal service will be held 2 p.m. at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
