NORTH NEWPORT – John Henry Buckland, 84, died July 1, 2011, at a Bangor hospital.

He was born Feb. 11, 1927, in Corinna, a son of William and Edith (King) Buckland.

He graduated from Corinna Union Academy and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Asiatic and Pacific theatres and also participated in the occupation of China. On Oct. 14, 1945, he married the former Mildred Randall. John worked as a produce inspector for the state Department of Agriculture for many years. He was a member of North Newport Christian Church; Parian Masonic Lodge, Corinna; member and past commander of American Legion Post No. 73, Corinna; and belonged to the USS Helena Association, U.S. Naval Cruiser’s Association and U.S. Naval S. C. A.

In addition to his wife of North Newport, he is survived by three sons, Bruce and wife, Susan, of Damariscotta, Victor and wife, Cecile, of Newport and Valmore and wife, Sandra, of Hurricane, W.Va.; a brother, William Buckland Jr. and partner, Chris Kelley, of Palmyra; a sister, Charlotte Anne Michaud of Corinna; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 8, at Corinna United Methodist Church, 16 Dexter Road, Corinna, with the Revs. Terry McKinley and Angela Tarbox

officiating. Interment will be at North Newport Cemetery.
