OLD TOWN – Marion Elizabeth (Mutanen) Cross, 77, died peacefully July 4, 2011, in Bangor after a short illness. She was born Dec. 15, 1933, in Ellsworth, to Henry Tovia Mutanen and Alice (Clarey) Mutanen.
She graduated from high school in Ellsworth and later attended several classes in the nursing field. She worked most of her career at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Marion loved going to her camp at Chemo Pond, fishing, knitting, singing, playing the accordion and guitar, and loved her pets, especially her poodles. She was very proud of her sons and their accomplishments. She had been a member of Daughters of Rebekah, the Grange and the Methodist church in Stillwater, where she loved singing in the choir.
She is survived by three sons, Richard Carter Jr. of Bangor, Brian Carter and his wife, Peppy, of Old Town, and Scott Carter and his wife, Lisa, of Hampden; two sisters, Ellie M. Richmond of Michigan, and Alicia C. Turcotte and her husband, Gerard, of Florida; and a brother, Lawrence G. Carter and his wife, Margaret, of Farmingdale. Marion was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Elmer Carter Jr. and Henry T. Mutanen; and a sister, Sylvia Estes; and her husband, Thomas P. Cross.
Per Marion’s request, a private graveside service for her family will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, at St. Joseph Cemetery, Old Town. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marion’s memory for an educational scholarship to Legacy, Inc., P.O. Box 133, Hampden, ME 04444.
