ORONO – David Gardner Hinners passed away July 6, 2011. David was born in 1924 in Neuilly, France, to Howard Hinners and Anne Gardner Hinners and raised in the Boston area.
After attending Phillips Exeter Academy, he spent two years at Harvard College before service with the Army Corps of Engineers in India. He then completed his Harvard degree and went on to earn a doctorate from the University of Chicago. In 1951 David moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the State Department, HEW, the Census Bureau and the Justice Department. After he retired in 1986 he wrote a book, “Tong Shao Yi and his Family; a Saga of Two Countries and Three Generations.” In 2005 he moved to Dirigo Pines, Orono. David Hinners was a world traveler, a sportsman, a history buff and a talented pianist, but his greatest passion was sailing. He spent his summers at the family camp in New Harbor, where he enjoyed welcoming his many old friends.
David is survived by his nephews, Chris Hinners of Austin, Texas, and Andrew Hinners and wife, Su Morin, of River Hebert, Nova Scotia; niece, Sarah Jack Hinners and husband, Chris Pasko, and two great-nephews, Phineas and Jasper Pasko, of Salt Lake City. His brother Richard died last year. David’s family thanks the staffs of Dirigo Pines and St. Joseph Hospital for their compassionate care.
Friends will be gathering for a farewell luncheon 1 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the Irish Inn, Glen Echo, Md.
