EDDINGTON, Maine — A crash that involved two minivans Thursday afternoon left two women dead and sent five other people to the hospital, including a father and his three sons.
Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Troy Morton told the Bangor Daily News it appears one of the vans crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the other.
The two women who were killed were riding in a light-colored van that came to rest just off the road. A man in that vehicle was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with life-threatening injuries, according to Morton.
In the dark-gray van were a father and his three sons, all from Nova Scotia. They all were taken to the hospital with injuries that ranged from serious to life-threatening, Morton said.
Route 9 between the 800 block and Route 178 is closed until Maine State Police accident reconstruction teams investigate the scene. Those crews arrived around 3:30 p.m.
Emergency crews from Eddington, Holden and Brewer also went to the scene. Officers from several police departments and Department of Transportation workers have blocked off Route 9 and side streets. The road will remain closed for several hours, Morton said.
Route 9 was still closed at 6:30 p.m., but police were beginning to remove the vehicles and debris from the scene of the crash.
Morton said more information about the accident would be made public Friday morning.
