FRANKLIN and MACHIAS – Barbara S. Denbow, 79, died Sept. 4, 2011, surrounded by her loving family at her home after a short battle with leukemia. She was born Jan. 6, 1932, in Machias, the daughter of Earle E. and Myrtle M. (Vane) Sprague.

She was a graduate of Machias High School, attended Husson College and Washington County Teachers College. She was employed for many years as a bookkeeper at many area businesses in Machias and Lubec. She enjoyed knitting, playing bingo, picking blackberries and cooking. She was known for her needhams and butter cookies. During her years living in Lubec, she was an active member with West Lubec Methodist Church, and cooked for many sales and suppers. She especially enjoyed family and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her five children, Brenda and husband, Harvey Newman, of Campobello, Raymond of Lubec, Jean and husband, Brent St. Clair, of Fayette, Jeffrey and wife, Gina, of Campobello and Lisa and husband, Billy Hooper, of Franklin; a brother, Edward Sprague and wife, Gayle, of Machias; a sister, Esther Pellon and husband, Ed, of Machias; grandchildren, Kris and wife, Meghan, Marcie and husband, Randy, Drew, Cody, Ryan, Katelyn, Sarah, Jacob and Hannah; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and very special friends, Judy and Hugh Hooper.

At her request, graveside services will be private. Burial will be at Longfellow Cemetery, Machias. Those wishing to remember her in a special way may make donations in her memory to Alstrom Syndrome International, 14 Whitney Farm Road, Mount Desert, ME 04660, in honor of her granddaughter, Katelyn; or Hospice Home Care C.H.C.S., 86 Main St., Machias, ME 04654. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services, Machias and Lubec.
