OLD TOWN – Rose Simpkins, 80, passed away Sept. 6, 2011, after a long stay at a Bangor health care facility. She was born Jan. 29, 1931, in Old Town, the daughter of Gerard and Juliette (Jamm) Dubay.
Rose graduated from Old Town High School. She work for F.W. Woolworth, W.T. Grants, and was a shoe cutter for Penobscot Shoe Co. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Daughters of Isabella. She also was a cop at Topps, Bradley. She bowled with the K. of C. Auxiliary. Rose went back to school at D’Lors beauty school in 1972 to become a hairdresser. She opened a beauty salon in her home and retired after 25 years. Rose loved spending time with her family and friends, playing cards, and rides to the ocean.
Rose was married to Fred Winter for 20 years. They had two children, Diane Winter and James Winter of Old Town. After Fred passed away, she met and married Warren Simpkins; they were married also for 20 years. Warren has two daughters, Karen Richards of Sagamore, Mass., and Leslie Hendsbee and her husband, Bruce, of Madison. She has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her father, Gerald Dubay; her mother, Juliette (Jamm) Dubay; grandmother, Rose Reed; her son, Roger Winter; her first husband, Fred Winter; second husband, Warren Simpkins; and her sister, Joan Dubay Cote. Rose will be missed by her family, dear friends, and her Westgate Manor family as well.
Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where members of the Daughters of Isabella will conduct a prayer service 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Friday at Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord, Holy Family Church, Old Town. Burial will be after at St. Joseph Cemetery, Old Town. Immediately after the services at the cemetery all are invited back to the parish hall for a light luncheon.
