HAMPDEN and SEATTLE – Henry Liu passed away Aug. 11, 2011, while scuba diving in his native Taiwan. He was born Sept. 24, 1948.

As a young man he served two years as a military police officer in Taiwan. He graduated from the Chinese Culture University with a law degree. After he and Christine Chou married in 1978, they moved to New England and began to establish themselves as restaurant owners. While no longer married, they remained good friends. Together they owned House Of Hunan, Brewer; China Wall, Bangor; and China Garden, Orono. Henry enjoyed traveling and outdoor adventures. His favorite activities were fishing, diving and boating. As a chef skilled in Chinese cuisine, he put his own personal touch on numerous classic recipes – such as sesame chicken, hot and sour soup, hot and spicy string beans – that became favorites of his loyal customers. Though he was warm and generous with his friends, he could be very serious in the kitchen, and will be greatly missed.

Henry was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his former wife, Christine; his beloved son, Charlie Liu of Seattle; his brothers, Jacob Liu of Springhill, Fla., and Hung yong Liu of Taipei, Taiwan; and sister, Susan Chu of Indiana.

A celebration of Henry’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Chopsticks, 167 Center St., Bangor. All are welcome. Rather than sending flowers, donations may be made to Literacy Volunteers of Bangor.
