BREWER – Joyce G. (Robinson) Spalding died Sept. 12, 2011, at a Bangor hospital with her family by her side. She was born March 1, 1924, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, daughter of Sidney Robinson and Lottie (Beach) Robinson.
She met her husband, Lee Spalding, during World War II while she was working at Ganong Chocolate Factory, St. Stephen, New Brunswick. They were married in 1947. The majority of their life was spent in Veazie, where they raised their family in the house they built on the Chase Road. They were active in square dancing early in their life together and in later years loved spending time at their camp on Schoodic Lake. Joyce led an active life right up to her passing. She was enthusiastically involved with church and senior center activities, freely giving her time to make jams, jellies or to ply her skills weaving baskets of various size and complexity to donate to charity events. She also kept herself busy and engaged by taking educational courses offered at the University of Maine, such as computer classes and classes on other various subjects. She loved to go on senior center trips to plays and concerts and to spend time with family and friends. She was fiercely independent. She loved conversation but was also content to just be in the company of her loved ones when the conversation lagged. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.
Joyce is survived by son, Chuck Spalding of Dedham and grandchildren, Racheal and Kenny and their families; daughter, Judy Gammon and son-in-law, Ron, of Dixfield, and grandchildren, Brooke and Stephen and their families; son, Ken Spalding and daughter-in-law, Candy, of Bucksport, and grandchildren, Geneve and Kristen and their families; five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher of All Souls Congregational Church, officiating. After the service, the family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be private for the family. Those who wish to remember Joyce in a special way may make gifts in her memory to All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401.
