WINTER HARBOR – Casper Edville “Popeye” Sargent, 97, passed away peacefully on the evening of Sept. 16, 2011. He was in South Gouldsboro, in 1914, son of Lester and Emma Sargent. His wife, Bernice, of 66 years passed away in 2006 and Casper missed her dearly. He remained in his home lovingly cared for by his three daughters and their families.
Casper proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in Southwest Harbor and Martha’s Vineyard from 1942-1945. His memories of this service remained clear to his last days enjoying this history with others. He was an avid sportsman all his life, deer hunting in his younger years and even bird hunting in his last years. Cap enjoyed telling the tales of deer hunting with his father; beloved brother, George; sister, Sylvia; and many friends that came to Winter Harbor. Casper was the recipient of the Boston Post Cane in 2009, honoring Winter Harbor’s oldest citizen. He was so proud to not only be the oldest in town, but living in the oldest house too. He also enjoyed the honor of being grand marshall in the Lobster Festival Parade the same year.
He is survived by his daughters, Margaret Grammer, his constant caregiver, Barbara and husband, Steven Michaud, and Jo-Anne and husband, Nick Renda; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The family thanks the Hancock County Homecare and Hospice nurses and aides, and the doctors and staff at Eleanor Widener Dixon Memorial Clinic for the years of loving care and guidance received. Also a special thanks for the prompt response to our needs from Coastal Med Tech’s staff. Thank you Father Mower for Dad’s final living blessing and Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home who so tenderly received Dad.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass to celebrate his life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ellsworth. In lieu if flowers, donations can be made in his name to Hancock County Home Care and Hospice, P.O. Box 16, Blue Hill, ME 04614. A service of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
