DOVER-FOXCROFT – Laura Towle Stacy, wife of the late George J. Stacy, died Sept. 21, 2011, at her home. She was born July 24, 1915, and lived to witness both World War I and the World Wide Web. Daughter of the late Adner and Aubine (Curtis) Towle, she was predeceased by three sisters, Helen Barker, Leona Hatch and Emma Meade; and two brothers, Charles and Vaughn Towle.
Laura graduated from Mattanawcook Academy, Lincoln; and Beal College, Bangor, before embarking on her first job as a bookkeeper for the former Stowell McGregor Spool Factory. Measuring both her career – at a time when society was still suspicious of women in the workplace – and her community service in decades, Laura retired from Merrill Trust Co. in 1980, after 27 years on the job – only to give another 27 years of her time as a volunteer at Mayo Regional Hospital. She was a member of the Miosac Club for 65 years, and among numerous other contributions, was the originator of the famous “Sebec Lake Ice Out” contest. Laura’s interests were as deep-seated as her dedication to central Maine.
Director of Mid-Maine Duplicate Bridge, as well as a frequent participant in games farther afield, she could often be spotted on Route 15, driving to the Greater Bangor area for a weekly game of duplicate. She was also a regular member of Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church. From bridge to bowling, golf to planting glads, Laura’s activities were widespread. Whether at her house on the banks of her beloved Piscataquis River or her cozy camp on Cottonbrook Road on the shores of Sebec Lake, Laura could be seen pausing to admire the call of a loon, enjoying a hand of cards, or taking a perfectly-made custard pie out of the oven before the eager eyes of family and friends.
The milestones – and the memories – of Laura’s life are peopled by her late husband, George, who died in 1995; a well-loved daughter, Suzanne; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special friend, Patsy Roberts, all of whom will miss her.
Friends are invited to celebrate Laura’s life 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Lary Funeral Home. A graveside memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the family lot at Rural Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Chad Poland officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pine Tree Hospice, 883 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426 or Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, P.O. Box 328, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426.
