CHESTER – Donald L. Whitney, 86, husband of Ida Mae (Fleming) Whitney, went home peacefully to be with his Lord Oct. 4, 2011, at home with his wife of 63 years by his side. He was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Chester, son of Harry Alonzo and Minnie Amber (Ireland) Whitney.

Don was a RFD mail carrier for 40 years and also spent 60 years as a farmer. He was active in town government and served as first selectman, as well as other town positions. He was a member of the Hospital Administrative District board of directors and served as its president for a time. He was a member of Horeb Lodge No. 93 AF & AM, Lincoln; Anah Temple Shrine, Bangor; and Northern Penobscot Shrine Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a 50-year member of American Legion Post No. 77. He was a member of Lincoln Congregational Church, where he was a past deacon and was a member of the Congo Mens Club.

In addition to his wife, Ida, he is survived by two sons, William R. Whitney and Mike Baranawski of Sodus, N.Y., and John R. Whitney and Debbie of Chester; five grandchildren, Christine Whitney and Scott of New Jersey, Ted Whitney and Elizabeth of Colorado, Robert K. Whitney and Samantha of Chester, Andrew Emerson of Florida, and Laura Skidmore and Nick of Winn; six great-grandchildren, Reed Whitney, Timothy, Katie and Emily Whitney, and Drew and Bree Skidmore; five siblings, Mabel Jordan, Harlan Whitney and Pauline, all of Chester, Robert Whitney and Faye of Topsham, Erma Tash of Howland, and Stuart Whitney and Gail; in-laws, Ronald McComb, Marilyn Whitney and Nancy Whitney; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a grandson, Jamie Whitney; as well as siblings, Perley Whitney, Harriet Fahey, Roscoe Whitney, Irene Jordan, Charles Whitney, Curtis Whitney, Nonie McComb and Hollis Whitney.

Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Michael Robinson officiating.
