PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – Henry B. Bartlett, 86, of 11 Edgewood Road, died Oct. 10, 2011. Born in Pembroke, he was the son of George Bartlett and Alice (Smith) Bartlett of Pembroke.
Hank resided in Bangor and East Rochester, N.H., before moving to Portsmouth, N.H., in 1972. Hank graduated from Pembroke High School in 1942, joining the U.S. Navy the same year. He worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and General Electric Co., Somersworth, N.H., before being employed by 2-Way Communications Service, Inc., Somersworth, N.H. He managed that company’s Gilford, N.H., facility before becoming the company president in 1972. During World War II, Hank served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Sangamon CVE26 in the Atlantic and Pacific. He retained his affiliation with the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving aboard the USS Libra AKA12 during the Korean War and retired from the Naval Reserve with 29 years of service and the rank of senior chief boatswains mate. He was a 56-year member of American Legion Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 and a member of Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 007. Henry was a life member of Pembroke Grange No. 245.
The family includes his wife of 66 years, Iva A. (Cushing) Bartlett; a son, Michael G. Bartlett and his wife, Natalie W. Bartlett, of Rochester, N.H.; a grandson, William R. Bartlett and his wife, Cherie Bartlett; and stepdaughter, Krysten Lebel of Dover, N.H. A cousin, Caroline Sawyer, resides in Peabody, Mass. His son, Dennis R. Bartlett predeceased him in 1970.
There are no calling hours.
A private memorial service will be held at a future date at the convenience of the family. Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of the arrangements.
