MERIDITH, N.H. – John E. McCarthy, 83, of Powers Road, died peacefully Oct. 19, 2011, with his family by his side at his home, after a brief illness. He was born May 15, 1928, in Bangor, the son of John P. and Ellen Louise (Givren) McCarthy.
He graduated from John Bapst High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948. He graduated from Bryant Stratton College, Boston. He rose from mailroom clerk to partner at Dolliff and McGrath Importers, Boston, during a 30-year career. He retired at 52 to his beloved Lake Winnipesaukee for 31 years.
He is survived by his sisters, Irene Daily of Salt Lake City and Julia K. McCarron of Litchfield, N.H.; three nieces, four nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Calling hours will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at Mayhew Funeral Home, Route 3 and Route 104, Meredith, N.H. A wake service will be held afterward. A Christian service and burial will be held at a later date at St. Francis of Assisi, Litchfield, N.H. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Londonderry, N.H.
