SEDGWICK – Stephen B. Pert, 51, passed away Oct. 20, 2011, after a valiant and courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 5, 1960, in Castine, the son of Colby L. Pert and Margaret (Gray) Pert.
Steve was an avid fly fisherman and could often be found going around the next bend in the stream looking for that big dark and deep pool, where the trout and salmon were laying shoulder to shoulder just waiting for someone to cast an elk hair caddis over next to the foam line. We know that he has finally found it and he is getting a rise on every cast. Steve was a jack-of-all-trades, having been a commercial fisherman, woodsman, carpenter, among others. His true love was stone masonry. Many of his works of art will survive him through the ages, including one of his favorites, a field stone pizza oven at the “Big Eddy” pool on the west branch of the Penobscot.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Belinda Jane (Hooper) Pert “B.J.” of Sedgwick; one son, Christopher Pert and partner, Leslie, of Nobleboro; one daughter, Nichol Pert of Sedgwick and Spencer Pond; his parents, Colby and Margaret “Peggy” (Gray) Pert of Sedgwick; four sisters, Rose Marie Roberts and husband, Lloyd, Lucy Bunt and husband, David, and Shannon Kelley and husband, Mark, all of Sedgwick, and Linda Cousins and husband, Bill, of Blue Hill; father-in-law, Lewis Hooper and wife, Marilyn; brothers-in-law, Leonard Hooper and wife, Mary Ann, Dale Hooper and wife, Mary, and Carlton Hooper and wife, Ellen; nieces and nephews, Shawn Hooper and wife, Erin, Missy Gray and husband, Paul, Becky Hopkins and husband, Justin, Dale Hooper and partner, Billy Jo, Samantha Hooper and partner, Leland, Tami Black and husband, Ed, Tammara Bunt and partner, Steve, Nathan Bunt, Destiny Lacrosse, Nicolas Bunt and partner, Sasha, Maggie Bunt, and Shawn Robinson and partner, Stephanie; many aunts, uncles, great-nieces and great-nephews, and about a million friends he made while on his fishing trips all over the state of Maine. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mearl Pert Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Moyle Gray; and his mother-in-law, Margaret Hooper.
At Steve’s request, there will be no funeral arrangements. The family is planning a special event to celebrate Steve’s life at a time and place to be determined later. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Steve’s name to help his wife deter expenses. Send to Belinda Pert, 180 Sis Porter Road, Sedgwick, ME 04676.
