EDDINGTON and BREWER – Katie N. (Morse) Powers, 91, passed Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at her daughter’s home with her family lovingly supporting her journey. She was born June 21, 1920, in Eddington, the daughter of Charles Walter and Lettie Jane (Pratt) Morse.
Katie spent most of her life in Eddington and was a 1938 graduate of Brewer High School. Katie served her community in many ways. She was a ballot clerk for the town of Eddington, school bus driver, Sunday school teacher, school room mother, and past president of the PTA for Eddington Consolidated School. Katie was a member of Eddington Historical Society and Bangor Arts Society. She was employed in all aspects of the family business, everything from pumping gas to driving the dump truck, and also enjoyed employment at Cox’s Knitting, Campbell’s Bakery, Frank’s Bakery, and retired from Emple Knitting Mill. Katie’s life was centered around her family, especially her great-granddaughter Kaylee Jane, who brought hugs, kisses and a glowing smile to Nana’s face every day. Katie enjoyed her life to the fullest and had a ray of sunshine in her smile. She brought joy to everyone she met. She was grateful for anything in life – good or bad – that came her way. Her way of thinking about her whole life was “aren’t we lucky.” She always found the good in anyone. Some of the things Katie enjoyed during her life were spending time at camp, oil painting and crocheting her ever famous hand wipes. She was always the first one to offer to help you. She enjoyed playing taxi for her grandchildren. There was never an occasion that Katie didn’t bake pies, cookies, brownies, casseroles, soups and lasagnas. Katie loved to cook and share with anyone with an appetite. The most important thing to her was making sure her family’s needs were taken care.
Katie is survived by her daughters, Sue Powers of Brewer and Patty Powers and her boyfriend, Tim Rogers, of East Orland; son-in-law, Wayne Harmon of Bangor; granddaughters, Katie Sue Powers and her fiance, Harold Emerton, of Blue Hill and Jolene Currie and her boyfriend, John Crane, of Brewer; great-granddaughter, Kaylee Jane Crane; many nieces and nephews, including special nieces and nephews and their families, Richard and Denise Boynton of Scarborough, John and Judy Morse of Trenton and Brenda Boynton of Sarasota, Fla.; and special friends, Mary Bragg, Mary Louise McEwen and her husband, Maurice Kelleher, Shirley Wilson and Bill Lenfest. In addition to her parents, Katie was predeceased by her daughters, Avis Elaine Powers and Carlene (Powers) Harmon; brothers, Harry, Lewis and Ernest Morse; and sisters, Florence Scripture, Eleanor Boynton and Lenora Dunton.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Brookings-Smith, Brewer Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Linda Smith, pastor of Elm Street Congregational Church of Bucksport, officiating. Friends are welcome to call 1-2 p.m. the day of the service. Condolences to the family may be expressed at
