GREAT POND and HOULTON – Philip Mark Howe died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, at home with his family, after a long and brave battle with the ravages of diabetes. He was born June 28, 1954, son of Philip Mansur and Carol Hagan Howe.

He attended Houlton public schools and furthered his education with course work through the University system and online. He worked for several years in Anchorage, Alaska, with the U.S. Postal Service. Upon return to Maine, he worked for Dead River Oil Co., Brewer. While living in Great Pond, he was a member of the American Council for the Blind, served as selectman for the town of Great Pond, and was active in school and community efforts. His love of the outdoors began as a child spending time in the woods with his father, Philip Mansur Howe. He continued to be an avid fisherman and hunter as an adult and, in turn, raised his own son to love outdoor life. As a young man he pursued interests in woodcarving, photography and fly tying. Although a man of many talents and interests, his greatest passion was for his family. His loyal communication with his mother, siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins was the link that helped keep the family in touch with each other.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia Larson Howe; son, Philip Matthew and his wife, Lilian Neal; mother, Carol Hagan Howe; sister, Barbara Howe Hogan and husband, Galen; aunts, Helen Hagan and Sandra Callinan and her husband, John; uncle, Sonny Webb; nieces, Karen Hogan and Elizabeth Elliott; nephews, John Elliott, Kevin Hogan, and Jason, Jared and Jamie Howe; and his wife’s siblings and their families. He was predeceased by his father; his sister, Rosemary Howe Elliott; and brother, Brent Hagan Howe.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Holden officiating. Friends may call noon until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
