MILLINOCKET – Harold S. Boynton Sr., D.M.D., 87, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Millinocket, son of Harry and Nola (Sargent) Boynton.

Harold graduated from Stearns High School, class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital Unit in Burma and Okinowa. After his military service, Harold attended Ricker College and Tufts University Dental School, graduating in 1952 with a Doctor of Medical Dentistry. Dr. Boynton shared his dentistry with the Millinocket community for 36 years, retiring in 1988. Harold was always an active community member. At St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Millinocket, he served as a junior warden for 11 years and a senior warden for 11 years. He also spent several years on the Millinocket School Board and the board of directors at Northeast Bank. Harold was a member of Francis Elliott Post No. 4154, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Free Mason’s Nollesemic Lodge No. 205, Millinocket. Harold’s most cherished times were days spent at his camp with his family and friends on Ambajejus Lake. He loved the outdoors, playing tennis, fishing, skiing and gardening. He is especially remembered for giving “bear hugs” to all those he loved!

Harold is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Alice R. (McFarlane) Boynton of Millinocket; seven children, Harold S. Boynton Jr. and his partner, Anne Ganem, of Bangor, Scott Boynton and his wife, Carol, of Lone Tree, Colo., Rebecca Boutaugh and her husband, Stephen, of Turner, Aaron Boynton and his wife, Jill, of Waterville, Kevin Boynton of Millinocket, Dr. Matthew Boynton and his wife, Suzanne, of Duxbury, Mass., and Dr. Brian Boynton and his wife, Marcy, of Cumberland, 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Olive Pound of Augusta; his brother, Robert Boynton of Millinocket; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Harold will be deeply missed by a special niece, Jan (Bears) Guida. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Mildred Bears, Ella Bears and Geraldine Fraser; and brothers, Arnold Boynton Sr. and Dr. Richard Boynton.

A Mass of Christian burial/ celebration of life service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 40 Highland Ave., Millinocket, with the Rev. Robert Ficks presiding.
