He married Katherine L. Ogilvie of Allisona, Tenn., March 25, 1944. He graduated from the Hutsonville, Ill., public school system, from Blackburn College, the University of Illinois and Cornell University.
Sabbatic leaves were taken at North Carolina State University and the University of Minnesota. A veteran of World War II, Stanley served from 1941 to 1946 in the U.S. Army, in the Armored Forces, in the U.S. and in Europe. He resigned his commission, as major, in the Medical Service Corps in 1961. A career in dairy and livestock reproductive physiology, nutrition, genetics and management led him and his family to professional assignments at the University of Illinois, Oklahoma State University and the University of Maine for assignments of teaching, research, extension and administration. While on campus he enjoyed developing and teaching classes, researching problem areas of the time, working with student clubs, with campus governance, with farmer-producer groups, with related processors-industry groups; and with appropriate state, regional and national scientific “societies” and international development projects in South America, the Philippines, Africa and Asia. The international work was volunteer and in conjunction with such groups as: Volunteers for Overseas Cooperative Assistance; Farmer to Farmer; United Church of Canada: Heifer Project International and USAID. During his career he earned membership and held offices in The New York Academy of Science, The Society of Sigma Xi, The American Dairy Science Association, The American Society of Animal Science, and was a cofounder and charter member of The American Registry of Certified Professional Animal Scientists, and was elected a lifetime member of The American Dairy Science Association, a fellow of The New York Academy of Science, a fellow in The American Society of Animal Science, an honorary life member in the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, and for his ongoing efforts on behalf of the Superior School of Agriculture of Mossoro, Brazil, he was named a patron and a lecture hall was named in his honor. Stanley received the fourth Annual Agribusiness Award of Robinson, Ill., and an Excellence in Teaching Award in the biological sciences at the University of Maine, where he retired as professor emeritus in 1985. He enjoyed short time fraternal memberships in the Masonic Lodge, Toastmasters International, Kiwanis International, Spectators Club; Red Red Rose, college-wide educators; The Yellow Dogs of America, a butter and cheese makers fraternity; and The Royal Order of Gopatis, the keepers of the King’s cattle. His serious work earned him citations in Who’s Who in America, American Men and Women of Science and other appropriate registries. He has presented the results of his research at appropriate scientific meetings, in refereed journals, the popular press, bulletins and mimeographed handouts for short courses and meetings. He was a longtime adult leader for Boy Scouts of America, a board member of the Salvation Army, a communicant member and ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church, and a member and moderator of the board of All Souls Congregational Church. He enjoyed gardening, building things – puttering, and being outdoors and doing things and going places with family and friends. We will remember him for his optimism, his cheerful nature, his faith and his love and support of family. We treasure memories of his twinkling blue eyes, his joy in creating our camp for family gatherings and his delight in the world around him.
