LUBEC – Gwendolyn Margaret (Johnson) Wasson, 87, died Nov. 4, 2011, at a Machias nursing home after a brief battle with bone cancer. She was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Lubec, the daughter of Harry and Margaret (Searles) Johnson.
She had lived in Lubec, her home for 85 years, where she enjoyed her families, her many friends, flower gardens, crocheting and sewing. She was a graduate of Lubec High School, a member of Christian Temple Church for 72 years, Christian Women’s Fellowship, West Quoddy Head Lighthouse Keepers Association, where she was a volunteer for several years, and a former member of American Legion Auxiliary Stuart-Green Post No. 65, Lubec. She was employed by Lubec Water and Electric District for 20 years, Dodge’s Department Store and Johnsons Bay Marine Co. until her retirement in 1974.
She is survived by a daughter, Sharen Kilton and husband, David, of Machias and Micco, Fla.; three stepsons, Bernard Harvey and wife, Susie, of Cape Cod, Mass., Robert Wasson and wife, Marie, of Cutler and Barry Wasson and wife, Sung, of Las Vegas; a stepdaughter-in-law, Carolyn Hauser and husband, William, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a sister, Kathryn Kilton of Machias; a sister-in-law, Mary Johnson of Portland; two grandsons, Paul Kilton of Massachusetts and Dean Kilton and wife, Denise, of Ohio; a great-granddaughter, Makenna Kilton of Ohio; two great-grandsons, Camden Kilton of Ohio and Nathan Kilton of Massachusetts; seven stepgrandchildren, 11 great-stepgrandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many dear friends including a pen-pal of 71 years, Mary Hermon of Elkhart, Iowa, whom she visited in 1980. She was predeceased by her first husband, Alexander G. Jones, in 1972; her second husband, Paul Wasson, in 1999; a son, David Jones, in 2001; a daughter, Karen Carroll, in 2007; a sister, Madelyn Doble, in 1962; three brothers, Gerald Johnson, in 1930, Clifford Johnson, in 2002, and Bernard Johnson in 2009.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Christian Temple Church, Lubec, with Pastor Dan Fritschle officiating and Pastor Gary Look accompanying. Interment will be after at Greenlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Christian Temple Church, P.O.
