NEWPORT, R.I. – Sally Ann (Manning) Salas, 64, of Bayview Avenue and wife of Francisco Sablan Salas Jr., died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, surrounded by her family at Newport Hospital, Newport, R.I. Born March 20, 1947, in Bangor, she was the daughter of Peggy (Bailey) Higgins of Bangor and the late Carroll “Barb” Manning.

When she was young she spent many years working at the phone company in Bangor. Then she met Francisco and moved with him to Newport, R.I. Once in Newport, R.I., she began working at Salas’ Dining Room. She started out by waiting tables, but throughout the years did a little bit of everything. Eventually she would manage the business along side her husband and brother-in-law, Jose. She had also spent some years as a Girl Scout troop leader. In her limited spare time she enjoyed antiquing, gardening, reading and going to yard sales. She was also an avid animal lover, but there was nothing she loved more than spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband of 41 years and her mother, she is survived by her children, Damion Salas, Tonya Mello and her husband, Benjamin, and Maren Salas, all of Newport, R.I.; brother, John Manning and his wife, Linda Farwell, of Hallowell; sister, Nancy Morey and her husband, Fred, of Bangor; brothers-in-law, Jose Salas of Middletown and Enrique Salas of New York City; as well as her grandchildren, Luke Mello and Haley Mello of Newport, R.I. She was the stepdaughter of the late Francis “Nig” Higgins.

Calling hours were held 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, R.I., where her funeral service began 4 p.m. Burial will be private.
