STONINGTON – Ivan G. Arey, 95, went to sleep Nov. 21, 2011, at a Deer Isle health care facility. He was born Sept. 22, 1916, in Stonington, son of George and Sylvia (Albee) Arey.

Ivan was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II. He worked all his life doing numerous jobs pertaining to the fishing industries, including ground fishing, lobstering and fish peddling. He also worked as a deck hand and cook on the schooner, Annie Rubin, delivering granite to western ports. On Oct. 28, 2000, he was entered into the Fisherman’s Hall of Fame in Stonington, and was presented with a plaque. He did lobster fishing and peddled fish to the islanders until he was 93 years of age.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Jennie Ann (Walkama) Arey of Stonington; three daughters, Lolita Arey Grater and her husband, William, of Ridgeville, Ohio, Jenina Arey Wood of Warren, and Laurel Arey Robbins of Stonington; one son, Sherrill Arey and his wife, Juanita, of Warren; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Margrite Arey Rice, and Arlene Arey Holland; and two son-in-laws, Roger Robbins and Paul Wood.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 9 Thurlows Hill Road, Stonington. Private interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Stonington.
