TEHRAN, Iran — Authorities in Iran said Sunday they are again moving ahead with plans to execute a woman sentenced to death by stoning on an adultery conviction in a case that sparked an international outcry, but are considering whether to carry out the punishment by hanging instead.
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is already behind bars, serving a 10-year sentence on a separate conviction in the murder of her husband. Amid the international outrage her case generated, Iran in July 2010 suspended plans to carry out her death sentence on the adultery conviction.
On Sunday, a senior judiciary official said experts were studying whether the punishment of stoning could be changed to hanging.
“There is no haste. … We are waiting to see whether we can carry out the execution of a person sentenced to stoning by hanging or not,” said Malek Ajdar Sharifi, the head of justice department of East Azerbaijan province, where Ashtiani is jailed.
“As soon as the result [of the investigation] is obtained, we will carry out the sentence,” he said, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
The charge of a married woman having an illicit relationship requires a punishment of stoning, he said.
He said judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani ordered a halt to stoning in order to allow Islamic experts to investigate whether the punishment can be altered in Ashtiani’s case.
Ashtiani was convicted of adultery in 2006 after the murder of her husband.
She was later convicted of being an accessory to her husband’s murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

I’d hope not.
They are just following biblical law. Are you stating that the word of God is incorrect?
Sorry all full here, sell it somwhere else.
Ya.
I just put one out myself.
Because we all know women in the United States have always been treated as equals to their male counterparts.
People like you drive people to embrace islam.
How does an atheist drive people to embrace Islam?
OK. I’ll bite.
How does an athiest drive people to embrace islam?
Atheist, not athiest and I’m looking for an answer myself.
Try “praying” for an answer.
That usually works great.
Sorry about the spelling.
Try Jesus.

So you want to murder innocent children? How nice of you.
I was about to post those exact words when I noticed your comment. :)
Sorry kevin but the people in the middle east have been bred to hate the world, they kill innocent children through suicide bombings and senseless executions brought on by their fanatical following of their religion. I’m sick of hearing about them and I think the majority of americans are as well, we need to to do humanity a favor and rid the world of them and their religion. nip it in the bud so to speak.
Your comment shows a deep ignorance on so many levels.
I couldn’t have said it any better.
The wording of this article is kind of confusing…the person who actually killed her husband has been killed. She was just involved in the planning of the murder. This article was kind of poorly written…I wish they had included more details so people could get a better view of the situation. Otherwise, why bother writiting it?
I’m sure there are hundreds of worse human’s rights’ violations going on right this second than a woman who while married messed around with another man while she helped to plot her husband’s death…being killed for doing so.
Actually we have no official religion.
It would only apply to the men who are sleeping with married women who they aren’t married to though. The act of adultery is the act of sleeping a married women. So men who cheat with unmarried women would not be punished. At any rate not that many more men than women cheat and the numbers are usually estimated to be that high (talking about married couples). If they have a strong case against her and she was well aware that that is the punishment for adultery then I don’t really see any more problem with it than I do with the death penalty being used for other reasons over here. I am against it period though…simply because I’m afraid of people being put to death and then later being found innocent.
Many good things have also come from religion. I’m not very familiar with Judaism…but most Christians don’t follow many/any of the old rules in Leviticus because we believe that Jesus told us not to on during his Sermon on the Mount.
Well, Christians seem to pull from the Bible whatever fits the need at the moment. They love to quote “an eye for an eye” while ignoring the “turn the other cheek part”
Our only difference is we strap you to a chair and electrocute you or administer poison to your bloodstream, but the end result is the same
Old rules?
You really need to read a bible.
Sounds like a conservative christian country to me.
I don’t agree with this for obvious reasons, but at least they are utilizing capital punishment as a deterrent.
We in the US claim that capital punishment is a deterrent to violent crime, yet we conduct all of our “punishments” under the cover of darkness hidden from the eyes of the world. If it is to be a true deterrent then why not administer it in a public forum, for all to see the fruit of criminal behaviour.
So, because we execute in secret we ar ecivilized, because they execute in public they are barbaric? seems like mere semantics to me.
