BANGOR, BAR HARBOR and MOUNT DESERT – Mette A. Watt, 76, died Dec. 31, 2011, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born Aug. 21, 1935, in Port Chester, N.Y., daughter of Lief and Edith (Christoffersen) Arup.

She graduated from Mamaroneck High School, Mamaroneck, N.Y., in 1953, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in industrial design from Rhode Island School of Design in 1957, and was a student in classical guitar at the University of Maine from 1995-2000. She was a member of League of Women Voters, Bangor; president of Auxiliary of Penobscot County Medical Society, 1982-83; member of Bangor Art Society; secretary of Down East Guitar Society; and a member and instructor for Acadia Senior College. Mette’s artistic career was extensive; she was an illustrator for GMAC in New York; an artist and industrial designer for General Radio Co.; an illustrator for Hanover Advertising Agency, Hanover, N.H.; a freelance illustrator in Orono and Bangor; and a multimedia artist on Mount Desert Island in her own studio: Mette Arup Watt Art & Design. Exhibits of her work ranged from Rhode Island to New York to Maine.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Thomas Watt, M.D., of Mount Desert; two sons, Charles Thomas Watt and wife, Anne, of Atlanta and Sherman Alexander Watt of Bucksport; and daughter, Kathryn Ann Skalak and husband, Peter, of Redmon, Wash.; and five grandchildren, William, Lisa and Andrew Watt, and Julia and Allison Skalak; niece, Susanne Westley; and nephew, William Kruse. She was predeceased by her sister, Kirsten Kruse.

A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert.
