GARDINER, Maine — Authorities say the driver of a cargo van that crashed in Gardiner last weekend, killing him and his adult grandson, was not legally allowed to drive.

The secretary of state’s office says 62-year-old Dennis Kay’s license had been suspended, which means he was not supposed to be behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Kay and his 25-year-old grandson, Carlton Norwood, died in the crash at about 8 a.m. last Saturday. Police believe neither man was wearing a seat belt.

A third man in the van was hurt.

The Kennebec Journal reports the men worked for a van rental company and were driving the van from Farmingdale to Windham.

Police say ice roads likely caused the crash.

  1. If your job includes driving, how can your boss keep you on? One of our mechanics was fired when his license was suspended (although in this case, it’s a moot point now).   Too bad…

    1. A company does not check the verification of a license every month. That would get costly. If you are in possess a license it is assumed that it is valid. The smart thing to do is have the state of maine confiscate your license when it is suspended therefor one can not fool a rental car company or a company with an invalid license.

      1. You are supposed to turn over your license to the state when it is suspended.  If you are caught in possession of a suspended license there is an additional charge for that.

        1. Yes, you’re right, but people routinely ignore that law… kinda like this guy did with the law about not driving when your license is suspended.

          1. I was simply letting euroexpat know that there is already a system in place to address their concerns.  People routinely ignore many laws, its human nature.  No level of realistic oversight is going to stop all offenders….

      2. Crack up one of your boss’s vehicles without a license and injure somebody, he’s libel for it because his insurance wouldn’t cover it. So it would behoove him to keep track of it. He can’t rely on the employee to tell him, whether it’s in his physical possession or the state has it. Any expense of monthly checks would be cheaper in the long run. Our boss certainly does it.

  2. shocker…..just one more driving without a license….at least he didn’t take the life of an innocent motorist driving…….

  3. I understand that driving without a license is illegal but not everyone got their license suspended for bad driving. So to blame the accident on him not having a license in my opinion is stupid.
Some people lose their license because of not paying child support, not paying a fine, but not always to do with bad driving.
I guess I just don’t see the relevance of him not having a license in this story, its a moot point now.

    1. tiredinbangor :  Yes, bad roads caused it not a license suspended stigmatized wording. they do need to clarify a bit more on the story
Yes JonathanKlondowski,  driver should not have been driving, you just didn’t get point ..sigh

  4. If we made the cosequenses for DUI and other charges ugly enough for some of these people we’d have less suspensions in the first place. When our company adopted a policy of no license, no job, our severe traffic offenses went from a bunch to zero. It’ all about consequenses for your actions.

    1. That’s true, but the article didn’t say it was suspended for DUI. It could have been suspended for failing to pay a ticket or a million other minor things. Fact still remains though, no license, no driving. Period. His fault, no one else’s

      1. On of the biggest “minor” offenses is failure to pay for your the welfare of your children. The rest of us pay that bill.

        1. Since this was a 62 year old man out with his adult grandson, while certainly possible, I have my doubts he lost his license for failing to pay his child support…

  5. surprise surprise, like a piece of paper is going to stop people from driving. Just like welfare driving is an “entitlement” to people of this mindset….

  6. The guy worked for a van rental company…guess they did not know his license was suspended.  This accident would have not happen if the guy listened and did not drive.
