MILBRIDGE – Eleanor Lottie Mathews, 89, wife of the late Harry E. Mathews, died Jan. 7, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Milbridge, the daughter of Charles and Jenny (Strout) Burgess.
Eleanor worked at Milbridge Nursing Home, Elway Packing, Addison Packing, Wymans and Cherryfield Foods, and did seasonal work with blueberries and wreaths. She was a member of Harrington Veterans of Foreign Wars and Milbridge Veterans Club Ladies Auxiliary. Eleanor enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crosswords, the daily jumble, Jeopardy! and a hot cup of tea. Eleanor loved playing Beano at many places, but especially at Gouldsboro Knights of Pythias.
She is survived by one son, David Mathews and his wife, Lori, of Milbridge; daughter-in-law and special friend, Jean Mathews of Milbridge; nine grandchildren, Gary, Rodney, Amy, Randy, Larry, Trina, Rob, Bruce and Debbie; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by eight sisters, Maxine, Venelva, Roberta, Iona, Lottie, Lorna, Peggy and Vicki; sisters-in-law, Minerva and Violet; many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Merrill and Harry Russell; one daughter, Sharon MacCormack; four brothers, Charles, Keith, Leigh and Robert; and two sisters, Donna and Nancy.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Main Street, Milbridge. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge. Condolences may be sent at
