CANBERRA, Australia — An Australian tourist bungee jumping in Africa plunged 365 feet into a river when her cord snapped, but she managed to swim to safety with a broken collarbone and her legs tied together.

Erin Langworthy told Nine Network television news Sunday that she blacked out briefly when she hit the Zambesi River on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe on Dec. 31.

“I felt like I’d been slapped all over,” the 22-year-old from Perth said.

Video taken of the jump shows the cord snapping and Langworthy smacking into the river before the current pulled her into rapids.

“You get sucked under and then you pop up so it’s very disorienting — I didn’t know which was up or down,” she said.

She said the trailing cord repeatedly snagged, so she “had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out of whatever it was caught on to make it to the surface.”

Langworthy swam through the rapids to reach the Zimbabwe bank.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Brenda Muntemba told the Post Zambia newspaper that Langworthy was treated at a clinic in Zimbabwe before being evacuated to South Africa.

The jump from the Victoria Falls Bridge is operated by Safari Par Excellence, whose website describes the bungee experience as “111 meters (365 feet) of pure Adrenalin!”

  1. “Gee, bungee jumping isn’t quite dangerous enough here in Australia, so I think I’ll go try it over a crocodile infested river in some third world hell hole where I’m sure they keep their equipment in top notch condition.”  Yeah, that’s what would have gone through my head ….. not!

  2. I ain’t no genius, but even I can see from this poor quality video that the bungee cord is frayed throughout.  This cord should have been discontinued a long time ago.  I never would have jumped knowing that the very cord that is keeping my body from plummeting 365 feet to probable death was in such disrepair. She’s lucky all she got off with was a broken collarbone.

      1. Me Too!!!! I am with you all on that one….the cord looks a bit fraied!  And the adrenaline rush….would be interesting to hear what she dove into the water!!!!

  3. I don’t understand this anymore than I do mountain climbing. You put your life at risk when you do stupid things like this. Let this be a lesson to her, and everyone.

  4. I’m sorry but anyone who will put their life on the line with an oversized rubber band to keep them from getting dead needs some medication. I get an adrenaline rush everyday. It’s called hauling wood over Maine roads. That will keep your heart in your throat all day.

  5. Holy bystander apathy…everyone in this video just stares and swears watching her get pulled down stream.  I understand they are on a bridge and that access is probably not that easy, but I would think someone would try to get to her, or even some discussion on how to get help, but nothing…damn, I don’t want these people helping me.
