SHIRLEY – Mary Evangeline Morey Nye, 86, died peacefully Jan. 10, 2012, with her family surrounding her at home. She was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Greenville, daughter of Angus and Martha (Mitchell) Morey.

Mary lived her childhood in Rockwood on the “Northern Hill.” She went to several high schools in Maine, New Jersey and New York City. She married Murray F. “Bill” Nye, May 5, 1951. They made their home in Pittston Farm and Shirley where they raised their three children, Ben, Bill and Mary.

She served the town of Shirley as a librarian, selectwoman, school bus driver and town clerk. She also became an operating room technician and worked at Charles A. Dean Hospital for many years. She belonged to the Shirley She Club, and had many hobbies including sewing, knitting and cooking. She was known for her homemade coleslaw for many of the town’s dinners. She was an active member of Methodist Church of Shirley and later Shirley Community Church.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Murray “Bill” Nye; granddaughter, Dorothy Macafee; and grandson, Charles Grinnell. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Morey Rosado and her husband, Raymond, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Loretta Nye Grinnell of Milo; son, Ben Alan Nye of Shirley; son, Bill Angus Nye and his wife, Caroline, of Ridgecrest, Calif.; daughter, Mary Nye Watson and her husband, Drew, of Shirley; grandchildren, Peter, Marie, Richard, Christy, Nikki, Kerrie, Brie, Kindyll and William; great-grandchildren, Justin, Claire, Wyatt, Hailie, Tristan, Zaid and Mathew; and nephews, Patrick and Mark Vassale of New York City.

A time of visitation will be held 10 a.m. until time of funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Shirley Community Church officiated by her cousin, Ronald Walden. A reception will be afterward at the church. A committal service will be held in the spring at Shirley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to C.A. Dean Hospital, P.O.
