BELMONT, Maine — A man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly head-butting a woman and throwing her keys and purse into the snow.
The woman had a protection from abuse order in place against Christopher Shaffer, 36, of Back Belmont Road, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office. “They decided as a couple to violate the [protection from abuse order] to get together and talk,” Trafton said Thursday. “It went downhill.”
Shaffer reportedly threw some of the woman’s belongings into the snow. She later told police that he also head-butted her when she was in her car and called her “vile names,” Trafton said.
The woman reported the assault, and responding police officers arrested Shaffer and charged him with violation of a protection from abuse order, domestic violence assault, terrorizing and criminal mischief.
He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast, where he remained Thursday morning, according to a jail administrator. His bail was set at $2,000 cash.

“They decided as a couple to violate the [protection from abuse order] to get together and talk…”
Why isn’t the woman in trouble as well?
Maybe because she didnt ‘head butt’ him?
they shouldn’t be charging him with violation of POA, they both agreed to see each other.
Imagine a PFA that has an exception that allows defendants to violate it as long as the plantiff agrees to it……..that makes sense. I think this story and subsequent arrest speaks for itself.
She’ll take him back!
“it went downhill”
Understatement!
but, but, but….
she should be charged as well and get the whole year in jail for not following the order i am sure she had to read the paper work she signed in order to waste the judges and tax payers time
Are you seriously wanting to jail her for a year? That is a waste of tax-payers money.
Whatever he gets for violation of a protection from abuse order, she should get too, or throw it out!!
….
You gotta be kidding, right? Orders to stay away are orders to stay away. There’s no varying and not one order has ever been issued that allowed the defendant or the victim to decide whether or not to abide by it.
….
examples should be made of the women who get these orders too
As far as my research shows most of these orders work both ways, I can not understand why she was not charged with violating an order.?
