DEXTER, Maine — The 2,800-gallon home heating oil truck stolen from a C.N. Brown fueling station was recovered Friday.

Dexter Police Chief Jim Emerson said the truck was found in a field off Valley Road in Exeter.

“Somebody saw it yesterday but didn’t hear about it being stolen until today,” Emerson said Friday. “They called to report it. An officer went down with a couple of other guys to get it.”

The truck wouldn’t start, he said. T&W Garage of Newport towed the truck back to a secure location in Dexter.

“We’ll process it when we get it back to town and look for any type of evidence,” said Emerson, adding that the fresh snow may make it difficult to find evidence around where the truck was found.

The Ford F800 truck was stolen from a C.N. Brown fueling station in Dexter between 2 and 7 a.m. on Thursday, said police.

Emerson said he didn’t know if there was still any fuel left in the truck. Dexter police said they probably would know more on Monday.

C.N. Brown General Manager Charles “Chick” Wilkins said Thursday that the truck had fuel in it when it was stolen, but he wouldn’t say how much.

He also said Thursday that both sets of keys for the truck were accounted for. Locks were cut on the gate at the fueling station.

Because police have yet to process the vehicle, they wouldn’t speculate on how it was driven off without the keys.

“We’re pleased to have it back,” Wilkins said Friday. “After the authorities have gone through it, we’ll look and see if we can identify who [stole it] and take the appropriate action.”

Wilkins said he also didn’t know if any fuel was still in the truck.

C.N. Brown is based in South Paris and serves Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

  1. I was thinking the same thing! If they are going to be ballsy enough to steal the truck Im sure they had figured out how to steal the fuel!

  2. Let’s see……sell fuel to someone at much lower price–purchase Bath Salts w/ $ , and yes, it’s in Dexter.

    1. I would assume the truck had home heating fuel in the diesel tank, most do. You don’t have to pay road tax on #2. I really, really feel bad for CN Brown ;-)

        1. my point exactly but who is going to check. It’s done all the time. A lot of people do things even if it is illegal, hard to believe ain’t it.

          1. it isnt done all the time..dot checks commercial trucks pretty regular..if they find they are using heating oil,the fine outweighs any savings in road tax..

    1. No. He has been out for a while. Just enough time to get desperate. Most people have forgotten about him. Unless they are one of his victims.

  3. Sometime the best people are forced to do bad things. LIHEAP has been cut back so much, and with prices rising, something like this will happen.

In an area with 80% of homes depending on oil for heat, why is LePage not pushing for state control of the heating prices?  Put a maximum price  say $2.50 and when it goes over that price, tax the oil companies a 20% surcharge. Watch how fast the prices drop or watch the shortfalls in funding go away

  4. why wouldnt they say how much was lost. something is fishy i am pretty sure a record of some kind would say how much should be in there.. reputable companys keep accurate records.. right??

    1. The WABI news reported that there was 500 gals of kerosene and 800 gals of heating fuel in the truck.

    2. For insurance per purposes. Just like when a store is robbed, they don’t tell how much money was taken.
