ORONO – Bryce W. Grindle, 75, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012. He was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Bangor, son of William and Frances (Caron) Grindle.
Bryce grew up in Old Town graduating from Old Town High School in 1955. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for two years on the USS New Jersey. Bryce married his wife, Laurissa, in 1958. The two moved to Old Town and Bryce started his lifelong pursuit of education in the fall of 1958 at the University of Maine. He graduated in 1962 and in that year started his first teaching position at Orono High School. Bryce then became the assistant director of student aid at the University of Maine. He started his 22-year career as principal of Leonard Middle School in 1971 and retired in 1993. Bryce received from the University of Maine his Bachelor of Arts degree in education, Master of Education degree and Certificate of Advanced Study, and his doctorate from George Peabody School for Teachers of Vanderbilt University.
Bryce is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Laurissa (Thibeault) Grindle; sons, Steven Grindle and his wife, Brenda, and their daughter, Rachel, of Portland, and Michael Grindle and his wife, Barbara, and their sons, Ryan and Tyler, of Bangor; daughter, Sharon Dunn and her husband, Michael, and their daughters, Heather Dunn-Levesque and her husband, Kirk Levesque, Casey Dunn and partner, Tim Bissell, Kathleen, and son, Liam, of Bangor; brother, Carroll and his wife, Lin, of Millinocket; sister, Darlene and her husband, Gene Borkowski, of Hudson; and breakfast buddy, Eddie Legere. In addition to his parents, Bryce was predeceased by his brothers, William and Galen Grindle; and sister, Sharon Gildart.
A memorial reception will be held 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Those wishing to remember Bryce may make gifts in his name to the Maine Transplant Patient Assistance Fund, 19 West St., Portland, ME 04102.
