PORTLAND, Maine — The U.S. Marshals Service says a 22-year-old Maine man is in stable condition after being shot by officers who were trying to apprehend him in Portland, but he now faces charges of attempted murder of a federal officer and illegal possession of a firearm by a felon.

Officials say Arien L’Italien, of Biddeford, fired a handgun at members of the U.S. Marshals Maine Violent Offender Task Force as they attempted to arrest him on Mellen Street at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Officers returned fire and struck L’Italien in the leg, who was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening. Nobody else was hurt.

L’Italien was wanted on a felony arrest warrant charging him with aggravated assault in Biddeford. Biddeford police say L’Italien is on probation for felony theft.

Portland police, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service are assisting in the investigation.

L’Italien is scheduled to make an initial appearance in federal court on Monday.

  1. US Marshals for an aggravated assault arrest warrant?  Care to elaborate on the rest of this story?

    1. A quick check would have informed you that the US Marshals Violent Offender Task Force is charged with serving warrants for state and local law enforcement. Maybe they’re better trained/equipped to deal with ‘Violent Offenders’. They were obviously correct about L’Italien being violent. Besides, elaboration can be confirmed with numerous others reliable sources. This was not a BDN byline, but an AP. But I really wouldn’t have expected the BDN to provide much more information anyway.

  2. Perhaps the Marshals would be so kind as to teach Maine police officers how to fire at other points on a body than just the torso??

    1. Torso is the biggest part to aim at.  You risk missing and hitting collateral damage if you start aiming at limbs.  Plus if someone is trying to kill you your not going to aim for an arm.  I bet if someone aimed a weapon at you you wouldn’t think twice about where you shot them.

    2. You were perhaps thinking the marshals are trained to shoot the guns out of the bad boy’s hand just like in the old west?

    3. I would perhaps send the Marshalls back to the range for remedial marksmanship training.  Remember Men “Shoot twice and check your kill”.

      1. In Parris Island we were taught “One shot, one kill.” Why shoot 2 bullets when 1 will do? Shooting twice has nothing to do with marksmanship what so ever…

        1. Sticking to rules like that can get you killed.  Fire until the threat is eliminated.  One shot or six, the count does not matter, stopping the threat does.

        2. Because at Ft. Bragg We were taught a lot of good soldiers were shot in the back by “dead” men. You’re right, it doesn’t have a thing to do with marksmenship but it does ease the case loads of the court system. And a hearty Semper Fi to you Sir!

        3.   I’m with working and PWand here.. Hubby was trained on Parris Island as well.. and he always taught to make sure they ‘stay down’ no matter how many bullets that requires.. ‘one shot, one kill’ is just a silly sniper wannabe phrase.

    4. Knowing several feds, all who went to the same federal academy,  I’d wager my house and bet that he’d tell you he missed and was actually aiming center mass .  That or the leg was the only thing showing.

And anyone who knows ANYTHING about deadly force would tell you that it is very appropriate to aim for center mass.   Not that I convince you or anyone here of it.  But then again, most everyone in here have no training or experience on the topic.  Just subjective emotions.

    5. Who said that’s where they were aiming? Not to many people out there can shoot like they do on t.v.

    1. Great show, but I don’t think it was Raylan…the guy is awaiting trial rather than identification.

  3. I simply cannot believe their story without proof or evidence. Cops are liars and will say anything. They will lie for their fellow officers, and their fellow officers will lie for them. Without video, I don’t believe a thing they say.

    1. Idont think they were going after him because he had to much bubble gum on hand or just to break up a boring day Mr. Ralph

    2. So, if you were pinned in a car, and it was on fire, and a cop stops to help you, would you say, get away from me, I’ll wait for a violent felon to come along to help me? I wouldn’t want to live in your world.

  4. Told you the last story that the guy was no good and it is too bad that the sheriff did not have a better aim! but it is what it is! Let me see, your a tuff guy and shoot at a group of cops?, ya real bright!

  5. Wow, You should read his facebook page……….as the kids today would say OMG, Dawgs, Lol, Please let him go to prison fast!
