HAMPDEN and ORRINGTON – James C. Melvin, 71, died Feb. 1, 2012, at a Brewer health care facility. He was born Oct. 4, 1940, in Bland, Va., the son of Burl and Hazel (Carroll) Melvin.
Jim graduated from Bland (Va.) High School in 1958 and then joined the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Limestone Air Force Base, where he met his wonderful wife, Mary. Jim retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 25 years. He was an avid sports fan enjoying all sports, especially softball and the New England sports teams.
Jim is survived by his mother, Hazel (Carroll) Melvin of Bland, Va.; his wife of 48 years, Mary-Betty (LaPointe) Melvin of Orrington; three sons, Scott Melvin of Bangor, Kevin Melvin and his wife, Kim, of Newburgh and Troy Melvin and his wife, Tricia, of Bucksport; his daughter-in-law, Lori Melvin of Orrington; two sisters, Ella Compton and her fiance, Bobby Newberry, and Phyllis Morehead and her husband, David, all of Bland, Va.; five grandchildren, Amber, Angel, Courtney, Olivia and Erin; several nieces and nephews. The family expresses sincere appreciation to the staff of Brewer Rehabilitation and Living Center for their compassionate support and care.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Teresa’s Roman Catholic Church, 425 South Main St., Brewer.
