AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage says he’s committed to taking on domestic violence in Maine.

In his weekly radio address Saturday, LePage said his administration will join forces with Maine Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Leigh Saufley, Attorney General William Schneider, the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence and others to introduce a variety bills in mid-February that take aim at domestic violence.

LePage said he left home when he was a child because of abuse taking place within his family. He said the focus on domestic violence must be shifted from a being a women’s issue to being a men’s issue since men are such a large part of the problem.

LePage’s office this week unveiled a public service announcement highlighting domestic violence awareness.

  1. {LePage takes aim at domestic violence}

    “If” he where a straight shooter he might have a snowballs chance in hates of hitting it!

  2. He is saying it, he hasn’t done it… having been there, they all say it, yet nothing happens… it is very scary… every one thinks all u do is call, and all is ok, but even if they are convicted… they still gget unsupervised visits with kids (ya, ok, they will beat a woman, but not a child?!), so u have three choices, convince your child to testify against his/her parent, put them in that danger, or defy the protection order…. makes no sense to me as a mom, hope he does change it

    1. Yeah as long as you have cheaper oil it is ok for people to abuse their family members. What a intelligent comment.

    2. Trivializing an important issue.  Doing more against domestic violence is an issue we can all do something about.  Reducing heating costs, other than improved weatherization, is largely beyond our control.

      1. whats he going to do move in with everyone and baby sit so you do not get beat up… yea right.. but he can do something about heating costs it is in our control if we do it

  3. When we make laws for political Reasons and try so hard to get that 100% conviction rate innocent People get charged Woman hit men much more than men hit woman but for the basic no mark complaint the man seems to get arrested much more. Even when a woman admits she made up the story (crime commited she lied saying he hit her of lied saying she made it up) the woman is not charged the case is not dropped. I can find no other explaination than some woman like to get hit. Seen it many times woman leaves abusive ex finds nice guy then leaves him for abuser. Yes we need domestic violence laws but they must apply the same to both sexes. Woman should be charged with a crime for going back to an abuser.

  4. His hearts in the right place as DV costs society a lot through increased medical costs, time away from work, litigation etc.  I am glad that he is working with MCEDV and look forward to their bills.  He is right that it just isn’t a ‘woman’s issue’, it’s a societal issue and men will have much more impact by coming out against violence.  The vast majority of men are not violent to women and they can have tremendous impact by not condoning abusive behavior.

  5. I think it’s hypocritical of LaPlague to talk about family violence when his, I mean ALEC and MHPC’s policies are in fact harmful to the working poor in this state.

  6. If there are to be laws passed for domestic violence then they need to be a two way street.  Men are abused as well as women but less likely to report. And I’ve known plenty of women who have claimed abused when there was none, with no repercussions. I’m not saying that there aren’t people who need to be protected, I’m just saying that it should be equal for all. And that if a false claim is filed then you go to court just like for anything else.  Please make the laws equal for both sexes not just one.
