PORTLAND, Maine — A gallon of gas in Maine has risen by nearly two cents per gallon in the past week to an average of $3.59.
Even though the increase in Maine was smaller than the national average, the average retail price in the state remains 16 cents higher than the national average.
Price-monitoring website MaineGasPrices.com reports Monday that prices are nearly 40 cents higher than a year ago and about 15 cents higher than a month ago.
A company analyst says prices have traditionally risen in late February and March, so consumers should expect to pay more at the pump in the coming weeks.
Every student and employee at the University of Maine, Husson University, New England School of Communications, and Eastern Maine Community College can ride the BAT buses free, anywhere in the system. Why can’t the hospitals and other large employers put a similar plan in place? Alternatives to driving DO exist, and ought to be expanded. You don’t always need to use a 2,000-pound maching to pick up a 1-pound loaf of bread.
It’s sad that the United States Government allows companies to post record profits every year. Not only record profits but the largest in American history and the only reason they get away with it is because our representatives from the President down are filling there pockets while the blue collar hard working Americans take a beating! This is why I love my country but hate our crooked Government!

I may not agree with the crooked government but I don’t have any issues with profitible companies. I enjoy gasoline. I enjoy the freedom and mobility it provides. I also understand that we in America have it easy relative to the rest of the world because oil is pegged to our U.S. Dollar currency in foreign exchanges of the commodity. We print the dollars, therefore, we get low prices….and of course our prices, as well as everyone elses, increase when we go on little dollar printing binges like Bernanke has been on of late. So in reality, Americans have it pretty good…for now. Once China, Russia, and India full detach themselves from the U.S. Dollar in oil exchange, the party is over and gas will double in a very short period.

How many oil tankers do you see the Government operating?
How many Refineries do you see the Government running?
How many Gas stations do you see waving the US Government LOGO?
How many Stocks does the Government own in OIL?
The Government Does not control oil, their prices or their sales.
There are those that want to make this a political issue, like a knight in shining armor will rush in and fix the problem. Ain’t going to happen. The problem is a commerce problem and will only be ‘fixed’ by commerce. If the government steps in and trys to regulate it, oil will become a very Scarce commodity and taxing it more is an absolute stupid move. Because YOU will pay the increased tax at the pump, NOT the oil companies….
It is true, our government does not control oil prices, but they could pass regulations to slow down speculation in the oil markets. Speculators keep prices high by buying millions of oil futures ahead without ever seeing them. Make these people take physical inventory of all of the futures they purchase so they will have to pay storage fees, etc, then see how many they buy ahead. They have oil way overpriced.
