VASSALBORO, Maine — A local teenager did “all the right things” while two intruders were burglarizing her home Tuesday, according to police.
The 16-year-old girl, whose name police would not release because of her age, hid in a closet and spoke to authorities on a cellphone while a man and a woman went through dresser drawers on the other side of the door, Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty said Wednesday.
When one suspect, Andrew Prior, 23, of Rome, opened the door and saw the girl, he fled the scene, but the girl was able to give police a description of the getaway car driven by Gypsy Carron, 22, also of Rome, and the suspects quickly were captured, the sheriff said.
“She didn’t confront him and she went into the closet and stayed out of the way until she was discovered,” Liberty said.
Prior and Carron were arrested after leaving the scene, Liberty said, and both were charged with burglary and criminal mischief.
Both suspects remained at the Kennebec County Jail on Wednesday, with Carron’s bail set at $5,000 and Prior’s at $20,000. Prior, whom police say broke into the home, has a previous burglary charge on his record and was on probation for that, according to Liberty.
“This isn’t his first burglary offense,” Liberty said.
The girl was home alone at the time of the burglary, according to Liberty. He added that the suspects pulled into the driveway and Carron knocked on the door. When the girl didn’t answer, Carron got back in the vehicle and pulled out of the driveway while Prior smashed a window to gain entry.
The girl subsequently ran down the hall and into the closet, where she first telephoned her mother, then called police.
Liberty said the girl’s description of the getaway car proved to be critical.
“They had just pulled out and were leaving when the police arrived,” he said.
Maine State Police Troopers Sean Porter and Derek Record assisted at the scene, Liberty said. The girl was not injured and the suspects did not get away with anything from the home.

you go GIRL!!!!
Excellent job young lady, keeping your cool! Glad it all worked out in your favor.
…..
Wow, way to keep a calm head there young lady….kudos to you…..”this isn’t his first burglary offense”……sounds like “his” punishment needs to include some significant jail time because he obviously did not understand that crime doesn’t pay, or he is a slow learner…..Crazy…..
This could have ended so very tragically if the alleged burglar hadn’t run off. Thank the powers that be that she’s okay.
She is one very brave and *very* lucky girl.
sounds like Mr. Prior had a few priors! Glad it turned out well!
People used to move to Maine to get away from crime, where will they go now? Years ago if you were staying in Orlando with your family the local TV news was enough to make you think about cutting your trip short and heading home. Our local news reminds of Florida now.
Great job, young lady! When you turn 18, get yourself a pistol and a concealed carry permit.
I’d agree with you, but she would need to be 21 to legally obtain a handgun… Just saying.
Afraid April’s right Puck.

just saying… Lol
Ah a true success story of Maine’s probation system…Yeah, right
And his sweetie’s name is Gypsy??? Yeah, I predict a lifetime of success for her…
Both bails should be set at above $50,000 cash. Just my opinion.
I wish the cops could issue some instant justice to these two career criminals in the making! They might switch to another career. Maybe.
This story is so scary. It could have been so much worse.
You go girl!, wow, what a hero she will be to her family! Now when you get to court, you look those fools right in the eyes with a smile, let them know they did not get you, you got them! Bless you!
My question is why was her bail 5000 and his was 20000? She’s is more of a flight risk cause she has a car… Good job young lady.
The article stated that his bail was higher because he was on bail for burglary…
I think they should be forced to forfeit all burglary tools, such as her car. If you’re poaching they can take your money (fines), gun (if one was used), & the vehicle used to commit the crime.
