BRUNSWICK, Maine — Brunswick police say they are investigating the theft of tens of thousands of dollars from a fraternal organization in town.
Officers of the Knights of Pythias reported to police on Jan. 16 that they believed another officer from the organization had taken “tens of thousands of dollars” from an account.
Capt. Mark Waltz says a 27-year-old Lewiston man who belonged to the group has been identified as a suspect.
He did not disclose the person’s name because formal charges have not been filed.
The man has been cooperative with investigators and Waltz says charges are expected.
Police told the Times Record the man stole the money between the summer of 2009 and the summer of 2011.

Why report this non story until all the facts are known?
Facts, shmacts…it’s a “cut and paste” from the AP.
Most of the BDN’s so called reporting is just as you say, Copy and Paste. BDN how is the big forced layoff working for ya? Those young reporters? don’t seem to like the word “work.”
Bdn is like any other press. You have to be the first to report and update when more comes in. This is the news industry. It is called news and it breaks, then forms, then updates. Sometimes you have the whole story all wrapped up, but usually this is not how news breaks. It’s usually one piece at a time. If the news media waited for all the facts first, you would not read the story, because you would already know the story. It wouldn’t make sense to be the last to report, with all the facts, while most people are viewing the breaking news as it happens. Breaking news is good business, just like giving out speeding tickets is good business to law enforcement, just like death is good business to funeral homes, just like every damn illness in this world is good business for the medical industry. Sometimes you have to realize, to be the first to report is also to be the first to get those customers… that is us!
This story must be false. There is no way they have a 27 year old member.
Obviously you know nothing about their membership!!!
Obviously you know nothing about their membership !!!
Knights of Pythias – Pythia is the Oracle of Delphi… Perhaps the Oracle spoke and told him to take the money…
I got up this morning and turned on the laptop and went to BDN website and the first thing i noticed was there was no new news ! YYYYYAAAAAWWWWWNNNN and back to bed i went !
You get what you pay for. The internet has provided free reading for all of us-and greatly reduced revenue for papers. Cut and paste is not isolated to the BDN , it’ s everywhere. Every online paper is not free. When I delivered the paper as a kid, in the 1960s they sold more papers then. “Good stuff isn’t cheap, cheap stuff isn’t good.
OK, I give up – what’s a Pythias??
The Oracle of Delphi
Isn’t a-delphi-a cable company ?
The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded at Washington, DC, on 19 February 1864.
The Knights of Pythias was the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor and friendship that are central to the order.
The order has over two thousand lodges in the United States and around the world, with a total membership of over 50,000 in 2003. Some lodges meet in structures referred to as Pythian Castles.
The order’s auxiliaries are the Pythian Sisters, the less serious Dramatic Order Knights of Khorassan, The Nomads of Avrudaka, and two youth organizations: the Pythian Sunshine Girls and the Junior Order, Knights of Pythias for boys.
