BANGOR, Maine — Two teenagers caught trying to steal candy from Ocean State Job Lot in December were arrested together again last week, this time for breaking into cars at Hollywood Slots Hotel & Raceway, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Tuesday.

Justin Amos, 19, a transient, and Kyle Haynie, 18, of Winterport were seen on video surveillance cameras opening vehicle doors in the Hollywood Slots parking garage about noon Friday and were stopped shortly afterward just down the street by Lt. Tim Reid.

Both were charged with burglary to a motor vehicle and each faces a second individual charge. Amos, who was out on bail, was charged with violating his bail conditions and Haynie, who had a set of brass knuckles in his back pocket, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, Edwards said.

The duo were both arrested and charged in December with theft and carrying a concealed weapon after police found a knife that “easily flipped open with one hand” inside Amos’ jacket and Haynie with a “slap jack,” a thin metal plate wrapped in leather, according to a previous Bangor Daily News story.

Both also have prior convictions, according to court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News. Haynie was convicted of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct last summer and sentenced to 48 hours in jail. Amos, who was arrested on Jan. 24 and charged with burglary to a motor vehicle, was convicted of sale and use of drug paraphernalia in December and sentenced to pay a $300 fine, BDN archives state.

Amos and Haynie were taken to Penobscot County Jail after their arrests Friday. Amos has been released but Haynie remained in jail Tuesday afternoon, a jail official said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

    1. I hope you’re being sarcastic, if not, then your input is very thoughtless.  Because if they were not doing that at Hollywood Slots, they’d be doing it at Sea Dogs parking lot, Wal-Mart parking lot, or the other multiple other areas where cars are parked in vast numbers side-by-side- also known as parking lots.  And, believe it or not, a lot of businesses use parking lots for their customers.  Even Churches.

  1. The first time they got caught for stealing candy I kinda felt bad for them. I mean its candy and they’re kids. But after this, no more sympathy from me. People work too hard for their things for them to be ripped off.

    1. Matt, I admire your sympathy; however lets keep in mind, they are not kids, they are legal adults.  When I was 19, I was in the service and overseas- just like many, many other men/women that age.  19 year isn’t a child.

      1. They are only legal adults by law and nothing more. Studies have proven that the male brain does not fully mature until the age of 25 so why they might be 19 and 18 years of age they might still possess the maturity of a 15 year old.

        1. especially if they have been frying their brains with drugs and alcohol…..one of them has a much longer record than what is listed here…

  2. The problem is the system failed these kids . Maybe got no education Did not have decent parents. Its petty now Lets hope these kids can learn from thier mistakes get an education and become productive member of society odds are not in thier favor . Even people I do not like I like to see do well . Doing well means they will not be stealing from someone else .

    1. Yeah, all criminals are victims. Slim chance of these two getting an education and becoming productive citizens. Brass knuckles and knives? It’s just a matter of time before they start robbing people with their weapons. Maybe they will rob someone with a weapons permit and pay the price. They had better  grow up before it’s to late.

    2. The system didn’t fail these kids! These KIDS failed these kids. Trust me you Will see their names again!

      1. I did not say they should not be punished > Im just saying the system jail ect. does nothing to help make them productive members of society. Make them work in jail  so they can learn how. Odds are we will be hearing more about these kids . I hope not .

        1. I’m betting that these two aren’t trustee candidates in jail. Besides, in order to become a trustee in jail, you have to be convicted. Jails are more or less holding facilities for those awaiting trial or those convicted of crimes and sentenced to 9 months or less, 9 months and 1 day sentence will send you to prison (as long as it’s a felony).

  3. The kids that commit these crimes are getting younger and younger. As their list of convictions grow longer and longer, they don’t stand a chance to straighten up and fly right.

    1. The kids stand as much chance as anyone else. They make a concious decision to commit new crimes that they know will bring them back to jail.

  4. These guys are idiots and I hope they get real time, but could someone please tell me what a knife is that
“easily flipped open with one hand” is.  Almost every “pocket” knife I see now a days, can be easily opened with just a flip of your thumb.

      1. I know what a switchblade is, but the description didn’t say spring loaded, but “flipped” open.  I was just wondering if most of the men in Maine were committing some crime by having a knife that  “easily flipped open with one hand”.

      1. Or a so called ‘gravity knife’. Push a button with your thumb and the blade drops straight from the handle. It came out after most places outlawed spring switchblades.

  5. This is the third time Amos has been arrested since December. I think we are seeing a pattern here. Note to Mr. Bail commissioner..,.DON’T LET HIM OUT AGAIN.

    1. The bail commisioner has to set bail by law. The one who was arrested for violation of bail plus the new charge will have his bail set by a judge. It is up to the arrestee to come up with the bial money.

  6. What an awesome idea!  Let’s go to the place with the most advanced/modern video surveillance system & private security in the entire northern half of the state!  I bet they’ll never catch us!  Who the hell is going to leave any cash in their car when they are at a casino?  These guys have to be the dumbest most useless criminals in the area, hands down.

    1. This could go two ways. Either the parents are actually good parents and the kids are just A holes. or the parents are the type to always blame everyone else for what they have or don’t have in life. I have seen that many times over the years. Bitchin’ because someone has more but those same people have the money for smokes and booze. Could be that the parents are blaming the ’50’ as we speak. or not

  7. OK, ADA Roberts…whats your plan for these infants?
Too bad there isn’t a well thought out life skills program to grow them up at their own cost like DEEP does to it’s offenders.
Watch the money these two will cost our state for the rest of their purposely misguided lives…….

  8. It would be nice if society would put some time and money into discovering what works for this age citizen.  The neurotransmitters which control judgement, planning, and interpersonal relations are not fully formed in some humans until well into their twenties.

The same “punish & release” response which might make an adult think is seen by these younger miscreants as a “challenge,” causing them to do the same stupid stuff over and over.  That costs us money.

I like the idea from the poster above who suggested a mandated training and skills program where they could earn the money used to make the program run.

These youngsters have 20 more crime prone years left (if you go by the average) maybe it would be cost effective to slow or stop them now?

  9. I been hearing an awful lot of people rambling on about how this person or that person “never had a chance”… Maybe I’m the eternal optimist but whatever happened to “Free Will’, “Self-Determination”, and my fathers favorite “Intestinal Fortitude”??? People have always had a choice to make in how to live thier lives… Not matter what life hands you, the choice is to either just accept it or change it for the better…
Some people just WANT to sit around and take the easy path, I have no sympathy for them… Are there some that have suffered mightily at the hands of others, life in general, or abuse?? Sure there are, and I can understand that they have suffered but I have no sympathy for the ones that just GIVE UP and hide behind thier trauma…
Dammit dust yourself off, collect up whatever you got left and start new… I can say this with certainty after losing my worldy possesions 4 times to house fires. Twice as a kid with my parents, and twice as an adult on my own… Thats not to mention the two divorces, and a couple other self made crisis’s I have been through… Life can be a wild ride, it can be very very hard sometimes. However if you make the choice to give it your all, at the end of every day you will be able to look yourelf in the mirror, your own mirror not one provided by the jail…

These two wanna-be punks haven’t just earned jail time they deserve and need it, and for myself I say good enough for them… They are making the choice daily to do what they are doing and be drains on society at large… Save your sympathy for those that need, want, and deserve it… Let those lemmings that refuse to give thier best try, to go down all on thier own…

    1. Good for the revenge factor, but doesn’t do much for society. In case you haven’t noticed, our country has more people in jail and prison than any nation on earth, and we still have more crime than anyone else.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.
