PORTLAND, Maine — Sen. Olympia Snowe’s primary challengers hope to ride conservative momentum driven by Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s strong showing in Maine’s caucuses.
Libertarian tea party activist Andrew Ian Dodge and self-proclaimed conservative constitutionalist Scott D’Amboise both hope to draw support from followers of the libertarian congressman from Texas, as well as self-avowed conservative Rick Santorum. Together they grabbed more votes than first-place finisher Mitt Romney.
Conservatives who’re flexing their muscle in the state party are targeting Snowe, who along with Sen. Susan Collins are among a handful of Republican moderates in the Senate.
During one of his recent stops in Maine, Paul’s state campaign chairman drew cheers when he told 2,000 supporters on a wintry day in Lewiston that it was time for “Snowe removal.”
Snowe, for her part, doesn’t like to be pigeonholed. She considers herself a fiscal conservative while she’s moderate on social issues such as abortion.
“While we may have differences, the undeniable common denominator that binds us is the traditional Republican principles of personal responsibility and limited government,” she said, proclaiming that she’s a lifelong Republican who always has supported fellow Republicans in Maine.
Maine’s Republican Party has undergone a shift to the right that became clear last summer when the tea party commandeered the party platform, going beyond traditional conservative staples to propose abolishing the U.S. Department of Education, sealing the U.S. border and taking steps to eliminate the Federal Reserve.
Many of those same conservative activists were energized during the caucuses, and that fact is not likely be overlooked by Snowe as she faces the first primary challenge of her career.
“It registered on her campaign’s radar, I think we can be fairly certain,” said Mark Brewer, political science professor at the University of Maine.
According to the GOP tally from the caucuses, Paul finished a close second behind winner Mitt Romney, with the tally becoming even closer after Washington County’s snow-postponed results from Saturday were included. Conservative Rick Santorum had a stronger-than-expected showing despite making little effort.
D’Amboise, who has raised more than $500,000 for his campaign, said Republicans are enthusiastic about the three-way GOP Senate primary because they have more conservative alternatives to Snowe.
“Everybody’s frustrated and they want change,” said D’Amboise, who visited a party for Paul supporters after the caucuses.
Dodge, for his part, views himself as a libertarian, so he hopes to get votes from Paul supporters. “The fact that Ron Paul is doing well probably bodes well for me,” he said.
Both would be well served to try to tap into Paul’s grass-roots organization, which was active in Maine in 2008 and is even stronger four years later, Brewer said.
But it remains to be seen whether Republicans hoping for a more reliable conservative than Snowe see a viable candidate in either D’Amboise, who did poorly in 2006 in his 2nd District congressional race, or Dodge, who said he’s having a tough time collecting signatures needed to get on the primary ballot.
Anthony Corrado, a government professor at Colby College, said conservative activists made their mark at the caucuses but the June 12 primary could be a different story because mainstream Republicans will want to rally around a strong candidate who can defeat a Democratic challenger in November.
“There’s a cohort in the party that’s in favor of conservative principles. Whether this group finds a candidate that it considers to be a viable candidate remains to be seen,” he said.
Snowe, for her part, isn’t taking anything for granted.
“She takes the race very seriously, and as she always has, she continues to travel extensively throughout Maine when she doesn’t have to be in Washington. She relishes the opportunity to make her case to voters in both the primary and general elections and will keep working hard to earn the continued confidence and support of Mainers,” said Justin Brasell, her campaign manager.

Olympia Snowe is a good, decent human being, and a competent Senator. She votes more conservatively now than in the past because of pressure from the Tea Party and Grover Norquist’s legions. Her party has taken a sharp turn to the right in recent decades, and Snowe is an anachronism in her own party now. I’m a former Republican, but there is no longer a place in the Republican party for people like me. The Grand Old Party has disappeared.
Whoever the Republicans nominate, I’m likely to vote for the Democrat — because a vote for any Republican is a vote for far-right Republicans to control the Senate, control committee chairs, and to control the agenda.
You gotta be kidding me or are you just kidding yourself ? read this for the truth,
http://www.opensecrets.org/politicians/summary.php?cid=N00000480 I can feel for you but this woman has been on the take for years.
It doesn’t matter who the Republicans or the Liberals nominate to go against her. She is not going to lose to any of the candidates that are running you got far left loons running. You also have Scott D’Amboise who couldn’t beat Mumbles Michaud for crying out loud and Andrew Ian Dodge who has no chance period running against Snowe in the Primary. She easily cruises to victory in the primary by no less than 60% margin of victory and easily walks away in the general. Snowe and Collins will only leave due to them retiring that is the only way Liberals will get them out. Maine is going to need the clout and experience of Snowe and Collins both in the next round of base closings to save Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
are you in the other Maine?
You say, “You gotta be kidding me or are you just kidding yourself ? read this for the truth…” But your point is not clear. The site you send me to shows that she’s raised a lot of money, as does everyone in the Senate, regardless of party. Doh! Yes, the whole system is broken. Snowe raises money to get re-elected, just as everyone else does. So what’s your point?
I said I probably won’t vote for her, even though she’s competent, and better than the average Republican. A vote for Snow helps put the far-right Republican agenda in charge in the Senate — because her first and most important vote in every Congress is for the Senate leadership positions. As a Republican, she votes for the Republicans to lead the Senate. Their programs are harmful to the nation — thus, I probably can’t vote for Snowe.
Snowe and Collins have both been in Washington forever, including when the Republicans controlled both the Congress and the White House. I think it’s fair to say that if they were part of the solution to runaway government spending (which is THE problem) it’d have showed by now.
Also, Snowe is terrible at constituent service: she takes forever to respond, then comes up with a reply that looks like nobody read the constituent’s letter, tells him what a good job she’s doing, thanks him for his interest and asks if she can be of any ‘further’ service.
Oh, and she doesn’t actually do anything about whatever the problem was. Wretched.
I have no brief for either Dodge or D’Amboise. For all I know, they could be worse than Snowe; somebody probably is. But we can definitely do better.
If the nutty base forces out Snowe in favor of someone more strident, as they did in Utah with Bennett in 2010, it will ensure a Democrat is elected here. Are you listening, Mr. Webster?
But she needs to go!
wow. so intelligent.
Did anyone ever think that if the Republican’s don’t amend their extreme (tea party), and in light of this little caucus issue, that the democratic candidate may stand a chance of unseating either Snowe or any other nominee?
Sorry Scott, but you are the only holdout that wont take a position on the Quimby National Park,,,, and many up here see that as one of the top issues…
Andrew; I think you have come a long way, and while if this was between you and lunchbox Mike— oh yes, I’d back you 100%, but I am going to have to stick with Olympia on this one.
So far:
*President: Santorum is my top pick, but even he hasn’t commented on the Quimby issue
*US Senate: Olympia Snowe has my vote
*US Congress: Kevin Raye will beat Michaud
*Maine State House: Debbi Perkins is the best candidate for the job
Cool story bro.
Oh yeah, go ahead and do the Tea Party candidates. Seems to have to worked well for Sharon Angle and Christine O’Donnell, right?

Ian Dodge would be great candidate! The GOP should all vote for him.
To those who say Snowe has been there too long… that’s because Maine People keep electing her. It was 74% of us last time!
Scott D’Amboise is a disgraceful human being! His biggest supporters when he got CREAMED by Michaud in 2006 were… Senator Snowe and Governor McKernan. They heledp with money, organization and she made numerous campaign appearances with Scott D’Amboise.
Funny though… in 2006, I don’t recall D’Amboise whining that Snowe had been there too long, or was too liberal, or was too out of touch, etc., etc., etc…. He wasn’t lying about her record either – at least not back then.
Now he’s lying and repeating the lies – even after they’re pointed out to him. That is either a deep character flaw – or he’s just stupid. Which is it, Scott?????
Truth is, if D’Amboise really wants to hold public office, he should try his town council again (if they’ll have him). Maybe even the State Legislature (if his district is desperate enough).
I’ve seen him speak several times, and believe me – he is NOT anything close to a U.S. Senator.
ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION: If Obama’s Defense cuts go through, and the Kittery Shipyard is threatened again (and there’s a very good chance of this)… Do you want anybody else besides Senator Snowe leading the charge?
P.S. You may notice I didn’t even mention Andrew Ian Dodge. There’s a reason for that! If you were electing a delegate for a Star Trek Convention… he’s your guy. Anything else??? I don’t think so!
Thanks for the enlightenment , Jock.
Its really a small state isn’t it :-)
I am a life long conservative Republican and a supporter of many elements of the Tea Party movement. I don’t always agree with Sen. Snowe, however she serves our state well, she has my support 100% for reelection.
You are not a Conservative if you support this RINO!!
jejune
Ms. Snow get off the fence. Nice to see you admittied you’re a republician. You can’t have it both ways. You admitted you want a republican back in the White House. You have a been a senator for so many years and you have NOT done enough for the people of Maine that keep electing you back. The proof everyone’s income has decreased. Yours has increased. Where are the Jobs? Unemployement rate is high. I agree with you we need less goverment. If you agree then step down, or is that just more talk to stay on the fence. What is actually happening the people of Maine are talking care of their neighbors, and friends telethons for heat, food pantries . Everyone is pitching in that can afford it.. This has nothing to do with you. I don’t see you involved at all helping the people of Maine. Shame on you. You don’t deserve to get elected again it will be the same ole same ole, Your philosophy is tell Mainers a good bed time story and hope they believe it.
When you make statements that include words and phrases such as “everyone” or “people of Maine” you are including me (and others) as ones who support your claims. For instance you say “The proof everyone’s income has decreased. ” , well My income has increased dramatically (Thanks to a certain group of republicans). So I guess that makes your statement less emphatic than you’d like. I respect your opinion but please don’t include me as support of yours.
Go Dodge!
Yikes!
Snowe sure does not want to be pigeonholed, as proof of this she constantly speaks out of all sides of her mouth while flailing about and blaming anyone in sight. Her support for the insurance and financial industries against the interests of ‘the people’ has been well documented. She has long since ceased to be a good representative of Maine and does not deserve to be reelected.
Should be an interesting convention this year, what with the blatant shenanigans going on.
It is becoming more and more clear that Tea Party movement is very seperate and extreme when compared to most intelligent Republicans. In many ways it will be the ruin of the Republican party.
Encouraged to do what? Line up and get slaughtered? These two loser wannabe-demagogues want nothing more than a slice of the cash cow…and they’re not going to get it.
