MILFORD – Barbara Ann Massey passed away Feb. 15, 2012, at her home, after a four-month battle with cancer. She was born March 11, 1960, in Bangor, to Wilburn and Carolyn Massey of Indian Island.

Barbara spent her childhood years on Indian Island and in Bangor. She graduated from John Bapst High School and went on to attend the University of Maine, Orono. In her later years, she and her partner and his two sons resided in Milford. Barbara thoroughly enjoyed the great outdoors and the family spent many years camping in their favorite spots in Maine. Barbara looked forward to her longtime dream of visiting the Smithsonian and the American Indian Museum, Washington, D.C. She was able to realize this dream in January 2012.

Barbara was predeceased by her father, Wilburn Massey. She is survived by her mother, Carolyn Massey; her sisters, Linda Brownlee and Laura Massey; her brothers, Sidney and Timothy Massey; her long-term partner, John Geib; and his two sons, Jeremy and Jesse Geib. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Penobscot Indian Health Clinic, CancerCare of Maine, Brewer, and New Hope Hospice for their tender, loving care and concern for Barbara. Additionally, the family would like to acknowledge the generous outpouring of support for Barbara by the Penobscot Nation; Tracy Whitten and her staff at the University Inn; her dear childhood friend, Yvonne “Cookie” Francis-Ferland; and all the relatives and friends who lent their support and comfort to Barbara and her family. Barbara was so special to all of us and will be dearly missed.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at St. Ann’s Church, Indian Island.

  1. I cannot believe this.  I worked with Barbara at Dr. Tibbetts office in the 8Os and loved her very much.  She had a sweet soul.  Rest in peace Barbara.  Your friend, Brenda
