BOKEELIA, Fla., and ELLSWORTH – Muriel D. Jones, 85, died Feb. 12, 2012, and her husband, Richard E. Jones, 83, died Feb. 15, 2012. They peacefully passed away as closely together as they had been in life for more than 61 years, at Hope Hospice, Cape Coral, Fla.

Beloved parents, they are survived by sons, Craig and Mark Jones; daughters-in-law, Susan and Jeannie Jones; grandson, Christopher Jones; sister, Patricia Totman; brother, Phillip Jones; four stepgrandchildren, seven great-step-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a large extended family in the Ellsworth area.

Muriel, the daughter of Ethel D. (Doherty) Damon and stepfather, Harry Damon, was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Caribou. She was extraordinarily loving, loyal and protective of her husband and family, and will forever be remembered by those who loved her for her good and generous heart. Her family and friends will rejoice in the many good times she was an integral part of and the memories and lessons she created.

Richard, the son of Clyde P. Jones and Katie B. Jones was born April 7, 1928, in Bangor. A man of remarkable character and compassion, he gave of himself to his family, friends and profession without thoughts of personal gain or reward. His guidance and wise counsel was always freely given if sought, but never forced. He was a calming influence on friends and associates, making everyone feel appreciated and respected. His devotion to his family was unequaled. Although he had many friends and hobbies, his favorite times and memories were those spent with his family. The term “good man” is often used to describe someone. He was the epitome of the term. Those who loved him will, hopefully, often imitate him; they will however never duplicate him.

Both Richard and Muriel were active in civic and charitable organizations too numerous to list. They achieved, but never sought leadership positions in most if not all of them. Both gave back more than they received and were content with the situation. Dick, Muriel … Grampy, Grammy … Dad, Mom … you were loved by many and respected by all. You have left a void in the hearts of those closest to you that will never be filled. You touched the lives of so many, and they were all the better for it. While we rejoice in all the good times and memories, you will be forever and sadly missed.

Memorial services will be announced in June with a date and time to be held at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in their memory to either Alzheimer’s Association, 383 U.S. Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074; or Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
