ROCKLAND, Maine — A package destined for a shopping center here was destroyed after a suspicious powder was detected.

Deputy Rockland Police Chief Wally Tower said Tuesday that the department received a call shortly before 8:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, from United Parcel Service on Merrill Drive. Security workers at UPS detected the powder in a package that was addressed to be delivered to 75 Maverick St., which is the location of the Rockland Plaza Shopping Center.

Tower said personnel suspected the powder may have been some type of drug. Tests on the powder were insufficient to determine exactly what it was, but did rule out drugs or hazardous material.

The package was destroyed, the deputy chief said.

The Rockland Plaza Shopping Center has several businesses including Hannaford supermarket and J.C. Penney. No more specific address was listed.

So why was it destroyed? And how? Please tell me it wasn’t blown up, dispersing the ‘harmless-but-unknown’ powder in the air.

  2. Maybe this story will get updated. Did the package contain anything other than the mystery powder? It is a bit strange that it wasn’t addressed to a specific business or person at the shopping center. I don’t think UPS would accept anything addressed that way but maybe they got it from one of their drop-off boxes if they have those in Rockland.
