MANCHESTER, Maine — Two months after Maine legalized the sale and use of fireworks, the state’s first store is set to open. And more are to come.
Steve Marson, who has owned Central Maine Pyrotechnics in Hallowell for 26 years, received his license to open the state’s first retail fireworks store on Tuesday. He will be open for business on Thursday.
“We’re excited about it. The people who are working for us are excited about it. Here we are,” said Marson while standing inside Pyro City Fireworks Store in Manchester. The building was undergoing its final preparatory work before a soft opening beginning on Thursday.
The Manchester location will be the first of four stores Marston will open before July, he said. A store in Edgecomb is next on the list, with an opening slated for the end of March or first of April. It will be followed by Winslow in April and a store in Presque Isle or Houlton in May.
He said he’s also eyeing the Lubec and Calais areas for a seasonal store and a location in Brewer.
The Manchester store was lined Tuesday with a variety of fireworks, including firecrackers, fountains, Roman candles, shells and novelties. But one has to be at least 21 years old with a valid ID to buy any of them. Every purchase also includes a list of precautions to help keep the customer safe.
“We’re doing everything we can to communicate safety to the people and make sure we have a safe store for everyone to come into, and also to allow the public to understand what it is they have at their fingertips now,” said Marson.
Marson said the variety of fireworks has greatly expanded over the decades. Some of the fireworks people traditionally think of, such as M80s, will not be sold in his stores or anywhere else.
“You can’t buy an M80 anymore. They’re not allowed anywhere in the United States,” said Marson. “M80s, cherry bombs or quarter sticks of dynamite [are illegal in this country].”
Marson said there’s still plenty to choose from.
“It’s a full array of everything, up to 500 grams of powder and anything up to three-inch-diameter shell,” he said. “There’s a lot more to it for retail in regards to product that’s available now than what it was before.”
Fireworks allowed in some other states that are illegal in Maine include parachute-style shells, spinners, missiles and rockets, he said.
“That means anything that’s on a stick or anything that has a fin cannot be sold in the state of Maine,” said Marson.
Marson has worked in the fireworks industry for nearly three decades. Central Maine Pyrotechnics put on 225 fireworks displays for the Fourth of July, New Year’s and other celebrations for cities in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont last year, he said.
The people being hired to work at his stores were previously jobless, he said.
“I looked at it as an opportunity to put people to work that are unemployed,” Marson said. “The people we hired here were people that were out of work. My main mission at all of my locations is not about hiring someone who already has a job, it’s about finding people who meet our application requirements so we can put them to work and give them a very good-paying job with benefits.”
Marson said each store will have three to five full-time employees.
“We’re looking to have 20 full-time employees and 10 to 15 seasonal employees from May to October,” he said.
Twenty-four cities and towns in Maine have prohibited the sale and-or use of fireworks, or have placed restrictions on the sale or use of fireworks, including Bangor, Brunswick, Ellsworth, Orono, Portland, South Portland, Rockland and Holden.

How lame, all the stores are way south. Get a store near Augusta, one near Bangor, one near Belfast and one near Ellsworth (so I dont have to drive to Bangor, lol)
Isn’t Manchester right outside Augusta?
Yes it’s outside Augusta. The store according to the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel is on Rt 202 at the old used car dealership. Will have to take a trip to that store till the one in Winslow opens up in April. Let Freedom Ring about time way overdue the Liberals were stupid to ban these fireworks. Unfortunately bottle rockets and missles are still banned.
You be careful now, we wouldn’t want you and your self-righteous opinions getting hurt.
Oh please. Been using fireworks for years and will continue to do so. Will even travel to NH and get the ones that are “illegal” like bottle rockets , missles etc.. Just because Liberals like yourself don’t use them doesn’t mean the majority have to follow you folks . We don’t want to be stiffs, elitists and bored to death like Democrats want everyone to be.
“A large nose is the mark of a witty, courteous, affable,
generous and
liberal man.” – Cyrano De
Bergerac
You don’t want to use fireworks that is your choice. But I work pay my taxes. As an Independent I will spend my money the way I want. The Nanny State is over thank god. I will go to Manchester, Winslow or any store that is close and buy fireworks because it’s patriotic, fun etc.. Just like I will continue to spend my money on Casinos , Horse Racing/OTB’s including Hollywood Casino, Oxford Casino because its entertainment I like.
Liberals need to go find something new to complain over because the Maine people we are fed up with their agenda.
I agree with you but I think you’re going to have to travel farther south than NH for bottle rockets and missiles as they’re illegal there too. What we need to do is get the law changed once everyone (Liberals) calms down and realizes that these massive injuries and deaths from fireworks aren’t going to happen. I hated the fact that they watered the bill down but it was the only way to get it out of committee. The thing is it’s a whole lot easier to change a law than to get a bill passed into law.
These pyrotechnic experts are not be questioned.
So what qualifies as an expert? A licensed pyrotechnician or some one whom sells fireworks?
The guy whom sells does not care as long as they make a sale.
Isn’t Presque Isle right outside the St. John Valley?
i sure hope they sell good stuff it would save about thirty hours of driving for a good time but i do know a game warden and his family who have been getting them good ones for quite a few years wonder where they came from
I’ll be there Saturday. I cant wait.
Hopefully win Darwin Awards, and remove themselves from the gene pool?
They are anti-Darwinists.
The same sorts who think fireworks are good business want to cut funds to hospitals and fire departments.
But the best part is they are the people who are saying Maine is gone to heck, and crime is out of hand, so I figure they would appreciate concerned citizens calling the police to report any sounds like gun shots.
So will the police.
I think fireworks or any business coming to Maine is a good idea (within reason). To say that the same people who think so want to cut firefighter funds in untrue. Being a firefighter myself, I certainly dont want funds cut.
I’m sure most people will be safe with them, like I have been. Of course you’re gonna have the idiots out there who will make headlines. As long as people use a bit of common sense, like watching the fire danger level before using fireworks, and not standing directly over a mortar tube when you light it, there wont be much news for you to read from your high-horse.
Don’t shoot that junk off next door to my house.
Just think of it as covering fire, and you get them if they do.
I think every resident of Brewer should gather at the waterfront and fire off fireworks…just to show the fine residents of Bangor that Brewer residents have open minded City Councilors unlike those in Bangor.
Brewer has a very old population that may or may not appreciate fireworks going off in the yard next door at 10 P M. The councilors really didn’t stand up for anything as there was no opposition when the matter was taken up.The police and fire were not opposed either. There is nothing to complain about yet. After the summer everyone will have a clearer view of how they feel about this issue. Until someone gets badly hurt or a fire erupts in a dry field there is no big issue. I think we all know that stories concerning fireworks will be way more interesting than endless DUI, transient, bath salts etc. pieces that pop up every hour. Can’t wait!
Fireworks have been legal to purchase and use now for two months. Aside from speculation of use on Skowhegan’s part, how many complaints have been made in the rest of the state? How many injuries have been recorded in the state since January 1st?
Until we have stores across the state I don’t think we’ll see the whole story.I don’t buy fireworks out of state, but I’d buy some locally for the 4th at camp. Hopefully we’ll all use them safely this summer and not cause more towns to ban them. The Manchester store will give alot more people a chance to purchase. Town governments will react to injuries, noise complaints and fires. If and when a little kid get seriously hurt, that’s when the debate may really begin. We’ll see. Thanks for the comment.
I look to our south and the state of New Hampshire. The fireworks that are available in NH are very similar to those that have been legal in Maine for the past two months. How many injuries and fires resulting from fireworks do they have a year?
Do you know if the individual cities and towns in New Hampshire can ban them?
Yes they can. Maine Legislators looked at NH’s law when drafting the bill here.
As a matter of fact the same fireworks that are still illegal here are also illegal in NH
IE; Bottle Rockets, Sky Rockets, Missiles. But Firecrackers and smoke bombs which aren’t legal in NH will be legal here. So there are some differences but for the most part it’s the same law
As long as it’s legal and being done in a safe manor, I’m sure there’s not a whole lot you can do about it if your neighbor wants to set off fireworks.
Boy Bangorian your having a bad day. First, Roxy’s Park is shot in the backside, now patriotic people shooting fireworks.
Quick! Everyone get your fireworks at light them off next to Bangorian’s house
Bring an ID
Lets follow the Tea Party Agenda
We need to Drug Test Fireworks Buyers!
*I dont want Welfare People Buying Fireworks with “My Money”!
* Poes Law
Let’s follow the Liberal Agenda
* Expect DHS to give you money to buy fireworks
* Occupy some part of a city in protest to fireworks
* Use your “medical” marijuana to light the fuse
So mortars are allowed as long as they are not more then 3 inches?
I dunno about the size restrictions, but I’ll be buying the biggest ones I can get. I used to buy 6″ mortars all the time when I lived in Florida. Those are something you have to time right so it’s not too late to wake the neighbors, but dark enough to enjoy the show.
Mortars are my favorite.
NO!!!!!!!!
Below is ONE DAY’s worth of fireworks complaints in Skowhegan. The ‘Shots Fired Complaints’ those are people complaining they thought they heard gun shots, but they were fireworks. The ‘Loud Noise/Music Investigated’, those are firework complaints. There were so many people calling in about fireworks, i heard a dispatcher on the scanner tell the 3rd shift cops, the calls have been coming in all day. .
Many of the people who voted for Lepage and work for a living and are complaining to the police about the fireworks. They are very angry at Lepage and the Republicans. I know because i talk to many people in Skowhegan.
It is not even summer yet,it is not even warm out yet, fireworks are not even sold locally yet:

lol, I have a old slate quarry boomer.. I’ll be right up to even it out..guns are legal in this state too.
who cares?
Not me. My house is up for sale as i retire in 3 months. I am moving out of state.
[This video of what Maine is becoming was the last straw for me, take a look at the innocent children, 2,3,4,5,6 years olds in the crowd watching: ]

Good hope you leave because folks here in Madison-Skowhegan area are glad this law is in effect. If you don’t like living in a populated area move up North or to the Bingham area.
“folks here in Madison-Skowhegan area are glad this law is in effect”
Folks here in Madison-Skowhegan have all kinds of time to play fun and games because they dont have to get up and go to work in the morning. They are leaching off of taxpayers like me that are leaving the area as fast as they can.
41 % of Madison residents are welfare recipients.
51 % of Skowhegan residents are welfare recipients.
Source: on file at the STATE OF MAINE
Yeah that’s because folks like yourself voted to keep Democrats in power so these folks can continue to be sitting home doing nothing. It’s your fault not mine . But to punish us because these folks are lazy should not continue. We have had to live in misery because of Liberals have wanted to keep Maine in the dark ages. Now they aren’t in power and freedoms are starting to come back your balking. Well I hope you sell your house so we won’t have to hear you complain about issues like this.
Congrats on the retirement. You moving to warmer climate or just out of state. Either way good luck.
I have two houses i am looking at,checking the finances on , Cape Cod or Weston Florida.
Well, good luck with either one.
You don’t like fireworks and are looking to move to Florida…. that’s like moving to Florida and hate hot weather.
Good choice! Florida has no crime at all!
lol
“Not me.”
Baloney….every single article or letter to the editor about fireworks brings you out posting about poor Skowhegan and how the hooligans are out blasting away.
All I can say is you have some incredible efficient Deputies in Somerset County.

If I were you I wouldn’t move. It looks like SCSO has a Deputy on every corner. By the way, how do you know the Loud Noise/Music Investigated or Shots Fired Complaint are what you say they are, fireworks. There is no notation in the radio log indicating that is what they are.
I was listening to the scanner . Also, while police were getting run all over town for firework complaints and they have no choice, other public safety issues were occurring and or on hold.
The fireworks nonsense is creating a real mess in the towns. I bet the Democrats are going to gather up enough angry public sediment on the fireworks issue alone, and put lepage and the Repubs on a train out of town in the next elections.
Here is a funny thing Skow Resident. In the town I live in and the towns that surround me not one “Pop!”, “Sizzle!” or “Bang!” has been heard since fireworks were legalized. And fireworks are legal in all respects in those towns too.
And after reading logs I wouldn’t make the statement “police were getting run all over town for firework complaints and they
have no choice, other public safety issues were occurring and or on hold”.
The Skowhegan call immediately before your fist Shots Fired Complaint was ASSIST CITIZEN call at 16:44:47 then your example at 16:58:30 followed by a MOTOR VEHICLE STOP at 17:34:55.
And calls are prioritized all the time based on the threat to life and property. That is a fact of public safety and will not change.
” Here is a funny thing Skow Resident. In the town I live in and the towns
that surround me not one “Pop!”, “Sizzle!” or “Bang!” has been heard
since fireworks were legalized.”
–Fireworks are not sold yet in your town or nearby yet.
Don’t Count Your Chickens Until Your Eggs Are Hatched
And they aren’t sold ANYWHERE in Maine yet SkowTown.
Exactly.
So prior to January 1st, 2012 SkowTown never had one “noise complaint” or “shoots fired call” not one.
I think I will drive to Manchester on Thursday and buy the biggest, loudest firecracker I can find and then drive to SkowTown and fire them all off, stand around and watch Skowhegan’s finest chase the “complaints” all over town and snicker.
Juveniles in Skowville throw rocks at vehicles for no reason. FedEx will not even drive down two roads in Skow without a police escort. Dont let the juveniles catch you setting off fireworks on thier tuff
I plan to go to Manchester and the soon to be store in Winslow. Shoot them off here in Madison and will drive the 10 mins to Skowhegan shoot them off their as well just to hear folks like Skow Resident complain.
I also noticed that all but one identified complaint came from 2 individuals. Sounds like a couple of busybody types to me wasting the time of police.
You wouldn’t happen to be one of them?
As i have said, each fireworks police log complaint represents 2 or more people calling about in. There were more fireworks complaints
And Nope. Someone sets off fireworks in my area i get in their face
Just the kind of neighbor everyone likes. NOT!!
We have an idiot Sheriff here in Somerset County in Sheriff Barry Delong unfortunately the Libs keep voting him in. He has done absolutely nothing.
It would never occur to me to call the police just because I heard a loud noise. Now, a bang followed by a human scream, yes.
“It would never occur to me to call the police just because I heard a loud noise. Now, a bang followed by a human scream, yes.”
That is common enough with fireworks.
It may just be a skowhegan thing. I heard loud bangs a month ago, I looked outside and saw fireworks so I just went back to bed.
You got a point there. In the past 4 hours there was another skow business broken into and a fight ending in a serious stabbing[that should be all over the news today]
Hmmmm… loud bangs… it could be your neighbor shooting his .357….
People who call the police to complain about infrequent noises should be arrested.
Last night we[Skow] had real incidents of ‘shots fired’ in 20 minutes time. Had no one called and it was a person shot, what would you be complaining about then.
Hey if you don’t like fireworks you can always walk in the woods and hug trees like the liberals do. Better yet you can read a book and watch Lawrence Welk Reruns on MPBN. Stop restricting our rights the welfare and nanny state mentality of the Liberals is sufficating it was getting old. We don’t need Augusta holding our hands or telling us how to spend our money. Shooting off fireworks a few times a year is fun it’s patriotic something Liberals seem to have issues with.
Hey buddy, leave Lawrence Welk out of this!
Agreed! Lawrence Welk was a well respected musician, and adored by my grandparents. We can’t say the same for liberals.
Oh please what Liberals scared of the truth. I don’t like Liberals telling me how to live my life or what to spend my money on. If I want to spend it on Fireworks, Casinos, Horse Racing , Movies, Fairs etc. it is my right. The Liberals can go back to their huts and live in misery. We have had enough of their bull and their sufficating behavior. They don’t like the fact the people are able to speak for themselves. If they want the Welfare and Nanny State move to Canada or move south where other folks can take care of you and hold your hands.
The forestry industry provides a lot of job for ALL Mainers, even conservatives. Don’t take your hate out on trees.
What period of time in Maine history would you rather live in?
Lawrence Welk’s time or today’s : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXgeqmjv_hU
Id rather live into today’s Maine with Fireworks legal , Casinos being legal with more likely on the way along with other Gambling choices if the Legislature has its say which its doing right now. Maine is joining the rest of the country getting out of the Liberal nightmare people has had to live for 36 years. That is the Maine I want with even more freedoms given back to us that Democrats took away.
That means anything that’s on a stick or anything that has a fin cannot be sold in the state of Maine…so what about repeater cakes and mortars?? no stick or fins but goes in the air
Congradulations! I know all too well the red tape of running and opening a business nonprofit or profit in this state. You had your work cut out for you, I’m glad you made it, best wishes! Not a striving economy. I hope our towns buy from you, not from out of state, hint, hint!
Congratulations to Steve! Central Maine Pyrotechnics is a quality group and have been delivering THE pyrotechnic shows to Maine fairs and festivals for many many years.
First off, what 665 jobs are you talking about? Haven’t heard a thing about it.
And thanks for your wonderful(not) leader who has taken this country down it’s worst path in history. Gas prices have doubled; the economy is still in shambles nearly 4 years later; one of our most respected leaders has just retired because of his lack of leadership in guiding our legislators; the deficit is worse than ever and will only get worse if his Obama Care isn’t squashed; he just nullified a massive job creating pipeline that would have helped reduce oil prices down the line; and oh yea, he threw 500 million of taxpayer dollars at a company that went bankrupt.
All LePage has done is reduce unemployment by over 1/2 percent in 12 months; brought competition for our insurance dollar to Maine, which last time I checked reduces prices; balanced an out of control DHHS budget; had our state in the black after the first 6 months of his term; paid back a small amount of the debt Balldacci ran up with our hospitals. And oh yea, we will all see a REDUCTION in our electric bills soon because of competition for that dollar.
But I guess if killing babies, not being able to protect yourself(of course you probably want someone to do that for you), and living off the government, are most important to you, than you can’t understand what a wonderful job he has done for our state.
I’m a bit skeptical about the caliber of fireworks the State is going to allow to be sold. Snowmobiles in this state kill and maim more people every year than fireworks ever will. Yet, sleds are routinely sold without any mechanical means of restricting speed. If this new law is merely going to result in the legal use of a few firecrackers, I can’t see how it’s going to support a retail business who’s sales are solely dependent on the sale of real fireworks.
Actually more people die while swimming and kayaking than snowmobiling.
I believe you missed my point.
I’m so excited!!!!
Sounds good, but I don’t see any Roman Candles, or screaming mimis, no lady fingers, fuzz buttles, snicker bombs, church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippity do das, or crap flappers. No whistlin’ bungholes, no spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don’ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin’ kitty chaser. Gonna be hard to make a living.
Love it.
It’s all about what the consumer likes lol
All I sell is Snakes and Sparklers because snakes and sparklers are the only ones I like.
AWESOME!!!! I can hardly wait to read about the first finger, hand, arm, head or other body damage… At least it will create jobs in the health care area, and maybe even in the funeral business!
Lepage and the Republicans legalizing fireworks is the proverbial ‘rope’ that is going to hang them in the next State elections. The Democrats are all set and planning to take graphic photos of Mainers seriously hurt or killed for use in the next state elections and send lepage and Repubs on a train out of Augusta. Just saying.
OH, and I’m sure there are some “Bozo’s” out there doing that too!!
You mean to tell me that you are opening a fireworks store and you dont have screaming mimmies , whistling bunholes, whoskidoos, whoskidonts, your gonna stand here and tell me you have noblackcats, no red rabbits, LOL You would have had to watch JOE DIRT to get this !
Can we perch Lepage on a bunch of roman candles and shoot him off?
