MILFORD, Maine — A wanted Indian Island man who reportedly assaulted a relative at the Milford Motel on Sunday night took off running across the frozen Penobscot River in an attempt to escape capture, Penobscot Nation Police Chief Robert Bryant said Tuesday.
“He had fled across the ice and one of our officers apprehended him” just before 8 p.m., the police chief said.
Officer Adam Brackett caught Darren Mitchell “on the ice on this side,” Bryant said, referring to Indian Island.
Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigating the assault in Milford asked for assistance from area law enforcement in capturing Mitchell, who turns 45 on Wednesday, after they arrived at the motel and he was nowhere to be found, Deputy Ray Goodspeed said Tuesday.
“The victim was transported to the hospital and released later that night,” the deputy said.
Mitchell also damaged property at the motel, and other motel property turned up missing after the incident, said Goodspeed, who charged him with criminal mischief, theft by unauthorized taking and domestic violence assault. Mitchell also was wanted on two outstanding warrants.
Penobscot Nation police had been looking for Mitchell for an assault that occurred a couple of weeks ago on Indian Island, Bryant said.
“He left the scene of a property damage accident after an altercation,” the police chief said.
Brackett charged Mitchell with assault and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.
Mitchell was taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and remained there on Tuesday, a jail official said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
